Overview of ABMS The idea of this overview is to simplify things a little, put the key links in one place and to try to get people started - things here were kind of spread around and maybe a little hard to follow. More detailed information can be found at these SPL threads and other links: http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t1070 - winbradley's excellent thread, especially on news servers and software, the keys to success with ABMS http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t1335 - Mac thread http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t0187 - Details on ABMS and NewsReactor A note, if you do use ABMS, you have Pete to thank for setting it up earlier this year. He drops by here now and then. Thanks to all who have posted info at SPL and ABMS, especially Pete, winbradley, ShabbyDog, spanishjohnny, Stampe, Doc, ... Introduction to Newsgroups With ABMS you can download music, video, artwork and more at your max download speed - I get 250 KB/sec. There is more good stuff than anyone (except maybe winbradley) can possibly download. abms = alt.binaries.music.springsteen. It is a newsgroup, much like the RMAS (rec.music.artists.springsteen) newsgroup if you are familiar with that. The idea is that text messages (almost like email messages) are stored on servers all around the web where anyone can download them. Some smart people figured out that you could use a code to put music, video, pictures, etc. into text and onto these servers and share files that way. (They are usually in separate newsgroups, referred to as "binaries" groups, because the messages are encoded and they would get in the way at text news groups.) But it usually takes many message posts to post 1 file. So to get at all the good stuff at ABMS, you want to have software that will consolidate all the messages (1 song can be posted in 200+ messages), download them, and decode them for you. A few key things to understand about binaries newsgroups: - - They have limited storage space, so after some period of time older stuff gets deleted to make room for newer stuff. So if you want something, get it right away or it will be gone. The time varies by ISP or news server, but it can be gone in as little as 1 day. - - Everyone is using a different server, so you will see different stuff than what other people are seeing. - - Files posted to any server get forwarded around the web, but not immediately and not always 100% complete. So you may need to wait several hours for parts of files to show up, and try more than 1 server to find complete files. There is a decent intro at http://www.slyck.com/newsgroups.html - slyck.com except that (1) their recommendations for news reader software and news servers aren't all that great; see below and http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t1070 - winbradley's thread for the real scoop; and (2) you have to say no to all the popups for spyware. Software Using the right tool is critical. People at SPL have tried many of the programs to see how they work with binaries. Here's a quick overview: Almost everyone new to binaries (even if you are an expert at text newsgroups) should start by using either http://www.shemes.com/grabit/ - Grabit (download, tutorials, etc) (free, more help files - thanks Doc!) or http://www.daansystems.com/newsreactor/ - NewsReactor (free trial, works better than GrabIt if you are are using multiple news servers to get parts of 1 file). They are clean, simple, easy to use, and designed specifically for binaries. They will show you each file as one line (not each of 165 parts, as Free Agent will). They will download a batch of files and decode them. If you have a decent news server (big if) - you can be downloading in 10-15 minutes. Start with 1 small file, an mp3 or something, just as a test. If you use a Mac, I've heard good things about http://www.asar.com/ - Hogwasher, but see http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t1335 - the Mac thread too. http://www.newsbin.com/ - NewsBin, http://www.usenetopia.com/ - NewsPro, and http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t0975#000000 - xnews are worth a look if you want something with more features. Perhaps if you want one tool for text and binaries, and posting, these are more what you want. But be sure to try before you buy. DON'T USE OUTLOOK EXPRESS FOR BINARIES. There's just no excuse for using it. DON'T USE FREE AGENT FOR BINARIES. It doesn't consolidate the display of files or support yEnc, last I checked. I'd also advise against Agent, the pay version, for some inexplicable reason old-timers recommend it, and it does work after a fashion, but it is really not at all the right tool for new users. I advise NewsShark. It's the best tool for usenet for only $27 and it supports yEnc Download the demo at www.wmhsoft.com If you have excellent quality files you want to share, see this discussion of http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t0199 - Posting files to ABMS. News Servers Getting reliable access to news servers may be the biggest hurdle in using abms. Usually your ISP will carry news groups, and offer access to news servers as part of the service. AOL has its own setup, which I'm not familiar with, and may not offer access to ABMS. If your ISP does not carry ABMS, a few options: - - ask them to add it, many will. - - if you can limit your downloads, winbradley has found some free or nearly free servers with limited downloads such as http://news.astraweb.com/freeaccts.html - astraweb or http://www.teranews.com - www.teranews.com ($4 one time setup); there are also other free servers that come and go - - like everything else, you can pay for service - http://www.giganews.com - www.giganews.com and http://www.easynews.com - www.easynews.com are the big guns, but there are lots of choices. One big advantage to the premium news servers is that the "retention" - the time files stay on the servers - is much longer, a couple weeks or so. They also have better "completion" - all the parts of a file are more likely to be there. Note from Pete: "I use http://www.uk.clara.net/homeaccess/options/claranews.phtml - claranews, ... if you are in the UK or Europe, you might want to take a look." More of Pete's notes at http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t6523#000029 - this SPL thread . See http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t1070 - winbradley's thread for lots more info on news servers, and look in the http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=8 - Community FTP/DC/ABMS Forum for other info. File Formats A couple comments on file formats: - - Some messages (much like this post, but shorter!) are posted in the binaries group, you can simply select them and "read" the message. - - All posts of files show the filename, so you can tell what kind of file it is from the file extension - such as mp3, txt, etc. - (But remember, a virus or a trojan horse can be hidden in an exe executable file, and file extensions can be faked. Be careful with any such files - best not to double click on any file you haven't checked out - test with WinRar, run md5, scan, etc.) - - - txt and nfo files. Be sure to download and read the txt or nfo files, they describe what you are getting. Open them with a text editor like Notepad. - - shn and md5 files. shn is a lossless audio compression format; you can recreate the original wav (CD-quality audio) track using a shn file. md5 files are used to verify that you got a good copy. Files are normally posted as shns, not encoded again as rar files. You just need to make sure they pass the md5 test after download. If not, download it again. For more discussion of shn and md5, see http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t0155 - this shn links and info thread. (Lately people have been posting PAR files too, see below, these can be used to repair or replace files that are missing or corrupt on your server. It's magic.) A couple super-useful shn links: http://www.etree.org - www.etree.org - software links and very useful installation faqs, a must-read for mkwACT to get the defaults right http://research.umbc.edu/~hamilton/shnfaq.html - Diana Hamilton's excellent SHN FAQ with lots of links and info - - flac files. flac is similar to shn, it is a lossless audio compression format, supported on a wide variety of OS platforms. You can get the full flac package http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id478 - at this SourceForge link. It has all platforms, not just Windows. This includes all documentation and plug-ins for WinAmp 2x and 3x - all in just 520KB. So just pick the most recent one for your OS. You'll also want the Flac front end - just 32KB - and if need some software it uses, too, like the Visual Basic Runtimes and the mscomctl.ocx, get that at http://home.wanadoo.nl/~w.speek/flac.htm - speek's webpage. There's also helpful info at http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=FLAC - etree.org. - (Temporarily offline as of Oct. 23.) - (FYI, BobSmo is working through his collection of - original pressed boots - to share great copies of great shows, many in flac ... the point being, there's more great flac stuff coming.) - - rar or ro1, ro2, ... files. video, vcds, etc. are sometimes posted in RAR format, which is a compression format like zip, used for a variety of file types. RAR also breaks up the file into chunks, which is more reliable for downloads. Download all the rar or r01, r02 etc parts. Then use Winrar (free trial) or Unrar (free) to test the download and unpack the files. Available for all OS platforms at http://www.rarlab.com - www.rarlab.com - RAR, Downloads or Extras If you get all the parts, and run WinRar or UnRar, it will create a file - an mpg video, for example, or for a VCD a bin and a cue file. A bin is a disc image file format. Burner programs, like Nero, can burn this to a disc and it will create the VCD. (One for each disc in the VCD set.) Usually it's just a matter of (1) having software that handles bin/cue and (2) point the program to the cue file. See below. Lots of good info about VCDs, SVCDs, DVDs and anything even slightly related at http://www.vcdhelp.com - www.vcdhelp.com - - par or po1, po2, ... files. PAR or parity files are optional. They are there to help complete any files that are missing or incomplete on your server. If the files you are trying to get are complete, then you don't need the PAR files. (For example if you get all the RAR parts for a VCD and they pass the WinRAR test or if you get a full set of shns and they pass the md5 test - then you are all set.) If not, to use the PARs you need the small PAR file, and one of the big files (which may be numbered P01, P02, etc.) for each missing or corrupt file you want to fix. Use http://www.slyck.com/smartpar.html - SmartPar or http://www.fluidstudios.com/fsraid.html - FSRaid to test and recover rar, shn or any other type of files if PAR files are posted with the files. Burning bin/cue Files Often VCDs or SVCDs are posted in rar format, which when decoded creates a bin and a cue file. bin is a format for a disk image file. Here are a couple places to look on how to burn the bin/cue files for a VCD. Mac users, see the http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t1335 - mac thread. http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/bin_cue_with_nero.cfm - Burning bin/cue with Nero http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=BurnBin - Burning bin/cue with Nero, CDRWin, CDRDAO, ... - not sure all the info here is exactly right, but every burner/software combo seems to work differently so that's hard to do anyway. It does cover a lot of software options. So ... this is the quick overview, much of this is posted elsewhere on SPL in more detail. Versions of all the software are also available for Mac, though if you aren't running OSX you may have problems finding software. See the http://www.lacava.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t1335 - Mac thread for more info. Please post any useful links, and what you learn about what works and what doesn't!
