I always thought his singing during the mid-late '70s showed a heavy influence from Paul Jones (later the star of the film Privilege, of interest to Patti Smith fans). "Prove It all Night" on Darkness could BE Jones singing. Dave Marsh ------------------------------ Date: 24 Feb 99 10:02:10 PST From: Jay Wilson Subject: Rather, what's wrong with US these days and why don't we like CD #4? > Now, in the late '90's, Bruce's lyrics are there, albeit a little too sparse >at times but the melodies are too simplied and begin to sound the same. I didn't feel the lyrics were too sparse at all on The Ghost of Tom Joad, though, so I'm pretty sure you didn't mean that one. This is probably the first CD of Bruce that really made me stop what I was doing and just sit and listen. And man, Bruce has some really wonderful and moving tales to tell. Particularly moving to me was "The Line". It's true that his melodies have become more simplified as time went by. It may be simple, but only deceivingly so. Such simplicity can only be reached through years of experience, of years of sifting through excess baggage ang gimmickry and come up with what is essential, fundamental, solid and honest. Simple is beautiful after all. As for his songs sounding the same, well, he's been guilty of this more back in the early 80's with songs like these: Child Bride: Some drivin down to Stovell Just lookin to get hurt. Highway Patrolman: Man turns his back on his family well he just aint no good. Car Wash: From Mercedes to BMWs I do 'em all and I don't favor none. I included the specific lines from the songs where the identical melodies occur. Bruce seems to really like that melody. As for Tracks CD 4, I think it's a great CD. I think a lot of us has been guilty of judging this work too harshly by comparing it to his part work and not look at them as songs indendently on their own. "Sad Eyes" is a nice easy going song with a welcome surprise of Bruce singing in a way I never heard before and he pulls it off nicely. "My Lover Man" never cast doubt on me about Bruce's sexuality. I always thought that he wrote it for a woman to sing and I never thought he was singing from his point of view. A very good song as well on it's own and I like it a lot. "Back in Your Arms" is a classic at first listening. I'm not fortunate enough to have seen the Blood Brothers video where this song, I assume, made it's debut so I'm hearing if for the first time on this CD. From this song alone, you can already tell how powerful a band the E-street band is after listening to the other songs on the CD by another back up band. This is my favorite song on this disk. This song could have easily replaced "Murder, Inc." on Greatest Hits. Sorry, for those fellas who like the song, but I guess it's just not my thing. I like pretty much everything on the disk including "Brothers Under the Bridge", "Happy", "Give it a Name", "Loose Change" and yeah, "Over the Rise." This song shares a very similar rhythm/cadence with '57 Channels...' is closer to talking than singing, and also includes a reference to Elvis shooting his TV. It also came out 2 years before '57 Channels...' I'd be very surprised if Bruce had not heard Bob's song before writing his (not that the similarity is close enough to suggest he stole anything). On another note, my 2-year old son has taken a recent liking to Bruce Springsteen and runs around the house singing 'we left the toys out in the yard'!! Perhaps it was the time constraints that influenced your decision?" Sorry Tim but I am going to have to disagree with you. Is it a great song? yes. Is the music great? yes! Is it a better song? no! Is it far superior? NO WAY!!! I believe what makes Bruce a great song writer that his music is better than the sum of it's parts. The song itself is better than the lyrics and the music. I believe the "alternate" version has great music and great lyrics but doesn't rise as high as "The River" version as far as evoking a feeling. The piano in "The River" version and his distant voice adds to the protagonist's alienation, where I believe the "alternate" version fails. Bruce obviously felt that "The River" version was better. No harm intended in this note, but the "superior" phrase made me write this. For the "definitive" live performance of "Backstreets", check out the legendary 15/12/78 show at Winterland in San Francisco (the 3-CD "Winterland Night" Bruceleg on Crystal Cat is the best source). Just like the rest of that concert, this version (with its great "I Remember You"/"Drive All Night" interlude) is a stunner. There also is another "string version" of the song available on the CD "War And Roses" (E Street Records), which features the same arrangement as the "Deep Down In The Vaults" take, but largely different vocals as well as a superior vocal performance. Sadly, the sound quality is far from perfect. I set out to choose 30 of the best of released songs, as a 30th b-day present for a friend (not a fan) -- we were all to bring her 30 somethings (titles of books to read, things she should do this year, etc.). Many of you from all over responded -- thank you very much! I promised I would post my list when it was complete. Here it is. Please note, several classic lines had to be left off because of the occasion. (For example, I deemed it in poor taste to include "You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright" in a b-day present for a 30-year-old single woman, even though it is one of the best lines ever.) And remember, these are some of MY favorites -- I don't claim to have identified THE best, just 30 OF the best. I'm submitting them for everyone's interpretation and hopefully that will help generate some interesting discussion. Question about "The River": ... Now those memories come back to haunt me. They haunt me like a curse. Is a dream a lie if it don't come true or it is something worse? Comments: What is haunting the character? He has a fond memory of his youth when romancing this girl he knocked up. Does he just long for those days as a single guy when he didn't have any responsibility? What does the "dream" refer to in this song? Bruce usually refers to the "American dream" of opportunity (prosperity), and how that isn't always possible with his characters. This character doesn't seem to be making it as a construction worker. Was that his dream? How does a dream lie to you? Question about "Stolen Car": ... Each night I wait to get caught, but I never do. Comments: Why does he fear being caught? Is he a criminal? An adulterer? Angehr) Subject: "My Lover Man"/"Brilliant Disguise" Hello everybody, "My Lover Man" has come up in a couple recent digests, and it's one of my favorite songs off of the box set. In addition to its being a wonderful song in its own right about reconciliation between longtime lovers, from the first time I heard it I believed it to be the companion song to "Brilliant Disguise." I know that we ought to be careful of eisogesis with Bruce's music, but to me the continuity and similarity between the songs seems striking. First of all, "Lover Man" and "Disguise" are of a piece musically. The drums, muted acoustic guitar work, synth riff, tempo, and lyrical progression strongly remsemble each other--both songs even have a gypsy reference. But the real connection is that "Lover Man" picks up where "Disguise" left off, with a switch in perspective from man to woman to boot. In the former song, the male lover (or lover man?) deeply questions his ability to love and support his lady. We might suppose that in the intervening period between the songs that the relationship has broken up, possibly due to the man's unfaithfulness ("men they make mistakes"). "Lover Man" takes up the story a few years later, with the lovers both older, still hurt, but ready to try to rebuild what has been lost, to regain their "beautiful selves" again. The couple is deeply aware of the disguises that lovers wear, but perhaps for the first time a vulnerability makes reconcilation possible--"I can see the change in your eyes," no more disguises. Bruce shows us the arc of a love affair, painted beautifully between only two songs. Am I stretching things here, or is the connection between "Brilliant Disguise" and "My Lover Man" tenable?
