How many of us have DVD players? How many of us without DVD players would shell out bucks for one just because Bruce released a live DVD? If the rumoured live release does materialise, I really hope it comes out on video as well. Up until now I have near-faithfully avoided the pirate market (my only glitch was a pirate cd of B sides that I couldn't find in the anyway). I bought all the albums on cassette as a young fan, and then on cd again when I got a cd player 7 years ago or so. I wouldn't dream of buying a pirate copy of Tracks for $20 if it had come out. Yet in fact, if the release is a DVD only release, I might very well consider buying a pirate copy on video whenever it inevitably comes out. I can only assume I am not alone. I have little other use for a DVD player; I watch few videos at home, and paying $300 for a DVD player is not something that I would prioritise in my life right now. Are there any artistic reasons not to release this show or compilation of songs from shows, on a video as well as DVD? I can see certain people in Sony pressing for a DVD only release, because Sony sells DVD players; and I suppose a some of us would go out and buy DVD players solely because a new Bruce release is not coming out on video. But I have come to expect more backbone and integrity from Bruce himself, and would hope that he or someone else puts a foot down and insists that there would also be a video release. I would rather that the live show was not released at all, than that it was released on DVD only. Because if it only comes out on DVD, I will be left feeling very disappointed in Bruce and his management. Any thoughts? You Can't Be Serious, Bruce!! Hi there! With all the hot new rumours on the probably upcoming live DVD - and it seems like it will be DVD ONLY, IF it happens - from the MSG stand, I would like to raise one question: What about the fans who don't own a DVD player, or can't afford to buy one?? Let me tell you all that, should this release actually turn out to be exclusive to that particular format, I'll have to seriously reconsider Bruce's "integrity" these days. Even though I could come up with the bread to obtain a player, I certainly won't do so just because Mr. Springsteen and his associates think they have to push DVD for whatever reason. Come on, folks, it's allright if you include some special features on the DVD (a complete bootleg discography, maybe?? ;))...but this should simultaneously be issued on VHS as well, right?? Also, as a friend of mine rightly suggested, Bruce probably would lose a lot of money, too, as those who don't have a DVD machine will eventually look out for cheap pirate copies on CD-ROM (which can be done pretty easily, with astonishing results!) in order to get hold of that material...I can think of at least one person that DEFINITELY would. So, any thoughts/opinions out there..??? In one of the Lucky Town digests a while back, someone posted that they heard Born In The USA was the very first compact disc to be manufactured, or something like that - but they weren't sure if their source was being truthful or pulling their leg. I don't remember exactly where the question was posted, otherwise I'd have sent this to that one digest only and cut-and-pasted the original posting. However, I CAN answer the question, and the information may be of interest to readers of both digests. The following was taken from Collectible Compact Disc Price Guide 2 by Gregory Cooper, published by Collector Books with a copyright date of 1998. "On October 1, 1982, the first CD was finally introduced to the consumer market in Japan. Billy Joel's 52nd Street got the honors. CDs, however, were not introduced to the United States until March 1983 . . . "In 1984 the first CD pressing plant, Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC) opened in the United States . . . The first two CDs to come off the line at DADC were a special promotional CD called the Edison CD Sampler and an appropriately titled disc Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen . . . "[The Edison CD Sampler] was manufactured at the Digital Audio Disc Corporation plant in Terre Haute, Indiana, and distributed at the plant's grand opening that September. The disc was given to attendees along with the 'red-disc' copy of Bruce Springsteen's Born In The USA." The reference to a "red disc" copy of Born In The USA is explained in this caption which accompanied a photo of the disc: "Springsteen, Bruce - Born In The USA (Columbia CK 38653) Because of the title, Springsteen's Born In The USA was appropriately the first disc to come off the manufacturing line (along with the Edison CD Sampler) at the first U.S. pressing plant Digital Audio Disc Corporation, just prior to its grand opening in 1984. This disc is unique from every other pressing because of the distinctive red printing on the disc. Termed the red disc, this disc was the only version given this treatment because at the time, the red ink used was very difficult to work with, and in fact, the discs used were being worked on up until the night before the plant's inauguration." With that out of the way, I have a non-Bruce question/request of my own. Can anyone out there tell me where I can get a copy of the Edison CD Sampler? It was November 1980. I was driving north from L.A., having caught a couple of "The River" tour dates at the Sports Arena. It was also election night, and the euphoria of a "Bruce vacation" was quickly fading into the reality of the Reagan Revolution upon us. Remembering my right of suffrage well in advance of the tour dates, I had requested an absentee ballot. Thanks to problems with the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters, the ballots were sent out late and a court order was forcing the county to accept the mailed ballots through several days after the general election. Having to listen to the radio pundits call the popular vote a Reagan mandate all the way up Highway 101, I was depressed. When I arrived home, I completed my ballot in the only way my conscience could be at ease -- I followed Bruce's suggestion of the previous evening and voted "to put a Big Man in the White House", casting a write-in vote for Clarence. I have rarely enjoyed supporting a lost cause as much as that ballot. This paperback was published in April 2000. It is written by a man named Don DeGrazia who apparently is a writing teacher in Chicago. It is the story of a "antiracist skinhead" in Chicago. There is a lively discussion of it in the reviews of it at amazon.com. I was wondering if it something that Bruce had read, or if the recent publicity over Bruce's song of the same name precipitated a mass market distribution of this book. Other miscellany: The current edition of Scenario, a magazine of screenplays and writing about film, features a long article "Behind the Shadows" about fil m noir. It analyzes the roots in American society of this genre in ways that remind me of various Springsteen themes: "Noir was filled with Depression-era imagery and iconography: vagrants and bums, train yards, all night-diners and moviehouses, hobo jungles, lonely open roads." or this: "In films like Crossfire, Act of Violence, The Blue Dahlia , Kiss the Blood Off My Hands, and others, returning veterans were depicted as troubled by their past, unsure of their future, carrying psychic as well as physical scars from battle." You can see the parallels best in the songs from Atlantic City, Stolen Car, and of course Born in the USA and The Ghost of Tom Joad. I am also reminded of the source of Thunder Road, a movie starring Robert Mitchum. Last, I was on a cruise in Alaska for a few days, which of course meant no Bruce for me. I got off the ship for the first time in Juneau and the first store I walked into had Greatest Hits on the store sound system. Stood there and listened for a good long time. It was like an oasis in the desert. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2000 09:45:13 -0400 From: Jacky Abromitis Subject: "Republicanized" From: Jim (Jimdanko@aol.com) wrote >Given how the presidential election could go either way and his anti-Republican stand, it would be interesting to see if Bruce uses his influence to gather support for >Gore this fall. I hope everyone enjoyed the summer, soaking up all your Bruce Juice! Today is Labor Day, the "unofficial" end of the summer in the good old USA. I finally cleaned out my in box, and decided to read the latest LTD. I skipped right over the "presidential election" posts in LTD #155, and went right to the last one, which caught my interest, David Kohn's "The Future of Asbury Park". David said: <> I agree with you, David. I, too, care what happens to Asbury Park. I have fond memories of Asbury as a child, and later as a teenager, seeking all the Bruce haunts. Even today, when I visit Asbury, even though it's a ghost-town, I still have hope that it can be a bustling town again. For those keeping up with what's going on there, the town is on it's way, but it's still a very long road ahead. And I still care what happens to Asbury Park, so much that I am considering moving there. It's always been my dream to live down the shore. I was born and raised in north Jersey, but most of my childhood family vacations were at the Jersey Shore, from day-trips to Sandy Hook, and week-long stays in Seaside Heights and Wildwood. The Jersey shore is in my genes just as much as the sand between my toes at any given beach. Well I have finally decided, once and for all, to make my dream a reality, instead of just dreaming about it. The timing in my life couldn't be better, as I'm getting older (and "time makes you bolder") and realizing that quality of life is more important than how much money I make, or how prestigious of a job I hold. Nothing is holding me here in north Jersey, so why not go for it? I don't wanna die with any regrets! I'm planning to move down the shore, and probably going to settle in Asbury Park to start out, because I imagine the rents there are cheap. The last I heard, there is a gay contingent moving into the town, buying old homes and rennovating them. It may take a year before I make the actual move, so I can save money and do my research. I can already picure my family and some friends saying "Why would you want to live in THAT dump?". Because I care what happens to Asbury Park. I'd rather live in a town that needs my money and spirit, more than where I currently live. The bond I have with Asbury is what is pulling me by the heartstrings. My long-term goal is to buy a condo anywhere in Monmouth county, but for now, an apartment in Asbury might just be what I need. I'm sick of the congestion in north Jersey. I wanna be near the ocean, and it's one of the few places on earth where I feel totally at peace. This also means getting a new job, and I accept the challenge. So step by step, my dream began today. I started looking for a part-time job so I can pay off my "Bruce Visa bill" from the tour! Some months ago I received a cd-r copy of the Bruce Springsteen bootleg called Prodigal Son. After having listened to that album some times I just could not help thinking about what the title track would sound like in a full band rock version. I think it is because Prodigal Son has a great melody that I think it would be amazing in a full band rock version with The E Street Band. Unfortunately it will almost certainly never happen that Bruce performes Prodigal Son live. No matter what kind of version we are talking about. But I am wondering - has anybody else out there in Springsteen land ever thought about Prodigal Son's potential as a full band rock song, or is it just me? Regards, Morten Sybrandt, Denmark.
