The fund was started in 1993 as tribute to Kristen Ann Carr, daughter of writer Dave Marsh and Barbara Carr, Bruce Springsteen's Co- Manager. Kristen passed away in 1992, succumbing to liposarcoma at the age of 21 and works to raise money to fight liposarcoma and to improve the quality of life for pediatric cancer patients. As always, we hope to raise the most money we can, but recent events have put a damper on many forms of fund raising. So, I turn to you. I am sure that many of you have received invitations to the event (If not, please contact me at michaelz@luckytown.org with your name, address and phone number) and raffle books. This year we are fortunate enough to have many great raffle prizes including 1-Year Unrestricted Movie Pass for 2 at Loews Cineplex Theatres 27" JVC Television " I Love NY" - Weekend Stay at The St. Regis Hotel, plus Visit The Peninsula Spa, Have Dinner and see a Broadway Show Panasonic Portable CD System Aiwa CD/Radio/Cassette Boom box Panasonic Portable CD System Panasonic Clock Radio Sony PlayStation Videogame System Sega Genesis Videogame System Sony CD Player Panasonic CD/DVD/Video Player Sony CD Player Scholastic Software Programs for The Entire Family 2 Tickets for The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra at Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall Scholastic Software Programs for Children Rado Watch At least 10 Different CD Packages Longines Watch Hamilton Watch Gift Certificate from Wedding Ring Originals Gift Certificate for Wine Course at Institute of Culinary Education "Chocolate Extravaganza" - A Basket of Sweet Goodies "The Sopranos" - The First Season on VHS 2 Tickets to VH1's Upcoming "Divas Concert" 2 Tickets to MTV's "Total Request Live" plus a tour of the MTV Studio Everlast Workout Wardrobe Vertical Horizon Poster signed by the band Dress Handbag by Stuart Weitzman and many, many more great prizes. I am selling these books of tickets as I have been for the last few years, and hope that the Springsteen community will come through. Last year I was able to sell over 100 online, raising over $4000 for the fund. I am hoping that this year I can do as well, if not even a little better. If you are interested in buying a book, they are $40.00 for 5 tickets, or you can purchase an individual ticket for $10.00. You can purchase the books or individual tickets from me by sending your request and a check to: Michael Zorek 107 West 86th Street #7F New York, New York 10024 Please make all checks out to The Kristen Ann Carr Fund. Such lists can be interesting, but are ultimately arbitrary in nature. What are the standards by which a band is "great"? Is it influence, longevity, number of units sold or what? Usually they become examples of industry influence beyond any other measure. Spin Magazine's winners seem "punkier" and more "PC" than the mainstream, yet a bit mixed. Naturally, Springsteen in no way falls into those realms. Is their list supposed to encompass more than just rock bands? It would seem that way, given the Marley, Parliament, Public Enemy and Fela inclusions. But if so, there are many more deserving artists in those genres than what we see here. It's as if they were included to show how "diverse" their list is. Artists falling well short of my "50 greatest bands of all time" would include Beastie Boys, Patti Smith, Outkast, N.W.A., Korn, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Fugazi, Blondie, Bad Brains, Massive Attack or New Order. Not that I disown some of them, but they don't merit a spot on a non-specific top 50. Notice also that the oldest groups on the list are (surprise) the Beatles (1962) and the Rolling Stones (1963). Most of these selections center on the last 20 years, reflecting the youthful perspective of the magazine's editors and the like demographic of its readers. Johnny ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 12:26:30 +0000 From: William.Blaik@Zarlink.Com Subject: Its all about the analysis David in New York posted two mails in the last digest... One mail was spin magazines top 10 bands, now I wasn't too sure what the criteria was, a top 10 of what? From David's comments it seemed to be a top 10 of influence, if that is the case its a pretty good list, though I think , not from a Brit perspective. I would guess that with the plethora of boy bands around in both UK and US then New Kids on the Block and Take That have had a lot of influence on the current music scene. Theirs are the records that sell, and it will be spin of careers from those bands that will be selling in 5 years. The Ramones influence at first seemed to me to be less obvious but with current new bands such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club covering hectares of music press then maybe not, even if The Jesus and Mary Chain are a more obvious influence. With that said The Velvet Underground must be high up that list (certainly for Scottish guitar bands). In the UK charts, for bands read, Stereophonics,Muse,Coldplay, Travis... not that much influence in the list below. The TOP 10 1. Beatles 2. Ramones 3. Led Zeppelin 4. Bob Marley and the Wailers 5. Nirvana 6. Parliament/Funkadelic 7. Clash 8. Public Enemy 9. Rolling Stones 10. Beastie Boys David went on to write in the other email: I challenge anyone to name any other artist in rock and roll history that has had the audacity to go this long without new material, and still try and sell us a DVD from a tour of 90% old material that ended a year and a half prior and was mostly already broadcast on TV. Lets look at the above list. The Beatles not recorded anything in 30 years and you can buy new videos and (recently) cd's. i am sure DVD's will be along soon... Let it Be (with lots of extras I hope) and Shea Stadium in the next 5 years? The Ramones, not much new of note for a good decade still a few releases of the old excellent albums. Led Zeppelin, nothing new in 20 years but best ofs, BBC sessions, books. Bob Marley...endless best of's. Nirvana, some dignity here one Live cd , though lots of unauthorised books. In fact of the above 10 only The Rolling Stones are recording new material, , and at a push The Beastie Boys, the rest are just rehashes of old stuff decades later. Even the Clash released a Live album, great though it is, and a DVD. It is all about the music, but not quantity over quality. There is so much good new music to listen to...Ryan Adams, Joe Pernice as well as established artists releasing excellent work. I'd give up beer for a year to have a new Bruce studio album next week, but the guy running the off-licence is safe. What is sure is when it comes, it will be worth the wait or my name is not Osima Bin Liner.. Will In Plymouth and it is precipitating down Meet the new Boss, same as the old boss.... The Who - Won't get fooled again ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2002 01:53:36 EST From: Swgaede@aol.com Subject: Landau at Pete Yorn Concert Jon Landau was in attendance at Pete Yorn's recent show in London. Apparently Yorn played bits of 'Atlantic City and 'Dancing in the Dark' at the show: http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Article/0,4273,4339425,00.html Pete Yorn is the toast of the LA showbiz elite - his brother is a swanky Hollywood agent; the likes of Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon turn out to hear him play - but nothing will shake the New Jersey roots out of the boy. To make sure we all got the point, he opened his set with a fragment of Bruce Springsteen's Atlantic City, and for an encore strummed his way through a sample of Dancing in the Dark. This, surely, had nothing to do with the fact that Springsteen's manager Jon Landau was at the back of the room. There's an air of predestination about Yorn's progress. He wrote the music for the Jim Carrey flick Me, Myself and Irene even before he landed a deal with Columbia Records. And his debut album Musicforthemorningafter is getting him tipped as 2002's singer-songwriter du jour for its combination of guitar-band energy, wistful melodies and bruised and sullen lyrics. It probably doesn't hurt that his wavy black hair and artistic stubble suggest more than a hint of Tom Cruise. This one-off performance, his UK debut, was intended to whet appetites for a larger-scale visit in a couple of months' time, to coincide with the album release. Yorn makes a slightly furtive frontman, muttering asides into the microphone and singing to himself rather than to the crowd. His voice needed to be shoved up much louder in the mix, too. But you still got an inkling of what all the fuss is going to be about. His best songs, like the deceptively caustic Just Another or the tingling popabilly of Life on a Chain, suggest that Yorn is beginning to create his own self-contained universe, while Black and the cranked-up Closet were greeted with howls of delight by the mysteriously large US contingent in the house. For the UK brigade, there was even a speedy blast of the Smiths' Panic. It's a little early to start calling him "Boss", but cynics should not start spelling it "Yawn" either. Also for completists, Canadian folkie Howie Beck covers 'I Wish I Were Blind' on his CD single 'Maybe I Belong' on Easytiger Records in the UK. It's a very mellow version, without the passion of the original. Still, I kind of like it. The collection contains a dozen originals and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City." Musicians include award-winning dobro player Randy Kohrs and ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons, who appears on the anti-Nashville track "Trashville." Last year, Williams appeared on a tribute album to his grandfather, "Timeless" (Lost Highway), performing the song "I'm a Long Gone Daddy." Williams is 29 years old, the same age at which his grandfather passed away. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 21:41:57 -0600 From: "Mike Walk" Subject: re:THIS should generate an interesting discussion Led Zeppelin simply ripped off American delta blues. Jimmy Page is way over-rated. There are better bands than The Ramones. Bob Marley and the Wailers? No question about talent. No question about the fact that Marley IS raggae music. But is he Rock? No. He is raggae. The flaw of this list is the same as others. It claims to list "rock 'n' roll" but lists artists from rap, hip-hop, raggae, and other genres. Why not George Jones? You laugh and say, he's country. So? We have raggae on the list! Also, another flaw is to list those who are rock martyrs. Where's: The Who, The Doors, U2, The Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Beach Boys? All of these should be in the top 10. Also, why eliminate those artists whose main output was with one cohesive band? Like Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Jimmi Hendrix Experience, and of course Bruce and the E Street Band! This is a flawed list at best. PC and inaccurate. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 12:49:00 -0400 From: "Amanda LeBlanc" Subject: David Mamet and Bruce Connection?? Hi, I've got a challenge for Digest members who are (hopefully) ready to defend Bruce to the death. My wife is taking a course in Modern Drama and is writing a paper comparing David Mamet's play American Buffalo with Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town alblum. Her professor thinks she needs to open with a quote connecting the two men. He suggested trying to find a quote from Springsteen saying he was influenced by Mamet because, and I quote, "of course, Mamet would not have been influenced by Springsteen." Any info you have connecting the two would be great (proper credit will be given); if you can find anything about Springsteen influencing Mamet, however, that would be particularly sweet. Thanks from both of us for any help you can provide. I'd like to make a pilgrimage (of sorts) to the site the next time I'm in the New York metro area and can't seem to find any record of it using an internet search. I'm assuming it has either gone out of business or changed its name, though no other recording studios seem to exist in Blauvelt today. Does anybody have an exact address for the studio's site? Also, if anybody knows the exact location of the houses that Bruce used to rent in the Hollywood Hills (where a few BIUSA-era tracks were recorded) and Colts Neck, NJ (where Nebraska was recorded), I'd also appreciate that information. Other than modern, corporate studio complexes in New York City and Los Angeles and Bruce's current residences in New Jersey and Beverly Hills (which I have no interest in visiting, at least while he is still living in them!), these seem to be the only other studio locations where Bruce has recorded album material he has eventually released officially.
