So, the U.S. system is truer, trust me! And as far as Dave Marsh goes: Goodonya Dave, keep winding 'em up and watch 'em bite!!!) are looking forward to a Springsteen tour the Saturday Herald-Sun is listing all the big acts that are slated to tour Australia. Skim past The Rolling Stones, Madonna and other such frivolity and we hit BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN (no mention of The Band, but I think it's fairly safe to presume that they'd be joining him) MID YEAR 2003! Pretty incredible for this fanatics eyes! *Especially* considering there has been no mention of a tour for the rest of the world!! Anyway, I live in hope. In a perpetual state of hope, actually! I can't help but wonder if my petition -- I put together a petition (300+ names) during the last tour touting the inequity of Australia not being on the tour schedule -- had something to do with Australia's recognition of the "world's premiere singer / songwriter" heading down to these parts!!!!! Yes, "world's premiere singer / songwriter" [I doubt few of us would argue with this description, either Š well, certainly the writing part] was how he was being touted in the lead up to the "Ghost" tour ... which, oddly enough, came to Australia Š by the ads for the tour on the telly. Of course by the time they got around to advertising the tour on the telly all the concerts were sold out! Here's hoping that the Herald-Sun are privy to information that Bruce, Landau & co. aren't ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Jun 2002 13:42:45 -0400 From: "pathenia@earthlink.net" Subject: Patti Griffin Stolen Car Cover Patti Griffin has recorded a beautiful cover version of "Stolen Car". It's on her new cd "1000 Kisses". Magnus Lauglo posted on Bruce and politics some time back in a way that was much more substantial and articulate than the weirdness that has just come up. You might want to search the archives for it. A couple things though: For most of his life Bruce was a political moron. He didn't vote and didn't have any notion what politics was, and couldn't articulate anything in particular about it. This includes his mumbling (it does not qualify as a "speech") on Nov 5, 1980 and the entire Nebraska album. I think you can make a case Bruce is still largely a political idiot, but I won't go there. Can we agree that Bruce does not play to his strength when discussing politics? Two unbelievable items from recent posts: Amnesty International is non-political? Please. Love it or hate it, it does not exactly represent a broad political spectrum. Low voter turnout is good? Cui bono? It's good for those who do vote (barring those whose votes are mangled in the system, viz Florida), because it increases their political power. Conservative voters are a pretty reliable voting bloc. It gives them power. Union members vote. Why do you think even conservative politicians listen to them? Yes, donations matter, but if you dangle your vote out there, you will get attention. If you have a record of voting, candidates and their pollsters call you and want your vote. Want more attention? Tell them you're undecided. Then tell them the issues that matter and what you will vote on. Now, with enough people on your issue, someone might want to placate you to get your vote. You don't vote? Why bother with you, then? Keep shrinking the government you are not bothering to vote for. The corporations are happy to pick up the power that the government gives away. Want to vote for your next CEO? OK, but it will cost you (in stocks, shares). And the more money you can spend, the more your vote is worth. Wonderful, no? It's called a plutocracy. I happen to like this democracy thing I keep hearing about. Maybe we should reinstate it (I think we lost it during the Reagan years). You know, broaden the power base. Empower as many citizens as possible, which increases productivity, and results in economic growth. Make fewer people feel so marginalized that they want to go out and blow things up. And if Bruce has said anything politically over the years, it's that we need to have more individuals participate fully as citizens. And that we should actively take steps to make that happen. respectfully, w.major ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Jun 2002 12:00:08 -0700 From: jsavage@concentric.net (Johnny Saulovich) Subject: Re: Darkness Anniversary >Date: Thu, 6 Jun 2002 21:50:21 -0400 >From: "Kevin M. It's a song about the destruction and the disintegration of a society that results from distrust, a lament about that distrust, and a prayer that bridges may be built. 9/11 arose from distrust between cultures and the ignorance that each of the cultures has of the values of the other. 41 shots may be a specific reference, but AS has a theme that is quite funamental, intransient, and of univeral applicability.... Having had a career in national political campaigns, 'I just gotta say, I have to say'........ that I am convinced you have to show at the polls, but you don't have to vote for who they offer and on that note I will admit to writing in Bruce and/or Clarence in three of the last five elections as a form of protest.. Maybe these songs are destined to be like "Seeds" or "Trapped" you know... live versions only. Anyway, I'm holding out for "Code of Silence" on a b-side. By the way, a few of the songs on "The Rising" are (by title at least) similar to other songs in the Springsteen canon. To wit: • Lonesome Day = Independence Day • Into the Fire = Streets of Fire • Waitin' on a Sunny Day = Waiting on the End of the World • Nothing Man = Lucky Man • You're Missing = Missing • Paradise = Trouble In Paradise - -Mike Ps. I hope the new songs don't leak out on the internet. July 30 is the released date... FOR EVERYONE!!! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Jun 2002 13:40:17 -0400 From: " Dave Rotella" Subject: My 2 Canadian cents! Folks, folks, folks. I admittingly only skim through digests unless it's a slow work day, however, I felt the need to jump in here regarding the new album. It's a new album. New material. The entire band (as someone mentioned) - all together. Is this not good enough? I personally can't wait. A summertime Bruce album. Happy, sad, political, non-political....I don't care. I'll I know is that my neighbours will be petitioning to kick us out of the neighbourhood as I sit on my deck drinking Jack on the Rocks on the deck with the stereo blaring! I just realized that the last time Bruce released a new studio album I was in University, living in a bachelor apartment and had to use headphones to listen to HT & LT....not this time, partner!!! Folks, we complain when he doesn't release an album, we complain when he does. He should have included this song, he shouldn't have included this song. The live album could have been longer, the Greatest Hits had to many BITUSA songs on it....whatever we can think of? I know that this is the point of a digest...to voice opinions. However, I can't see anything to complain about. All my favorite E-Streeters, a new album by the "Man" and an upcoming tour (hell, I've already pulled one of my summer vacations and am holding it for a Jersey trip). "It's been along time" since Bruce and the band released a full studio album. The more material he releases in the next 10 years, the better! Let's all just enjoy the "Summer of Bruce!" We don't know how many more of these we'll get! I have a new sound system and wanted to listen to one of favorite non-Bruce discs. So I slip in Pete Droge 'Necktie Second'. Great disc! I was pleasantly surprised to see it was produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien. He also played guitar and sang on this disc. Anyway, besides knowing that the new disc will be great to have, it feels even better knowing some of the producers other work besides what I have seen referenced here already. YEAH At this point just turning on the TV or Radio is an adventure... will they be warning us about a dirty bomb, poisonous skin divers or will today just bring the threat of another plane crash? How do those words go? "Wrap your arms around me and cover me~~~~" Cover me is how I feel.. it was the song that got me hooked and it is the promise of more Bruce magic that keeps at least a part of me a believer. I can not wait to hear his spin on things. i know for sure he will elevate it to a level my heart can only feel right now.
