Fred - - ------------------ Springsteen Tix On Sale This Weekend Updating yesterday's (July 10) report about Bruce Springsteen's forthcoming tour in support of his Columbia album "The Rising," tickets for six of the trek's 39 North American shows will go on sale Saturday via Ticketmaster. Shows in East Rutherford, N.J. (Aug. 7), Washington, D.C. (Aug. 10), New York (Aug. 12), Cleveland (Aug. 14), Auburn Hills, Mich. (Aug. 15), and San Jose, Calif. (Aug. 27), will all go on sale between 9 a.m. and noon (local times) via Ticketmaster. Tickets for the Aug. 24 Los Angeles show will go on sale Sunday; the Las Vegas (Aug. 18) and Tacoma (Aug. 21) shows will go on sale July 20. A Nov. 9 stop in Columbus, Ohio, on the tour's second leg will go on sale Aug. 17. The Ticketmaster Web site lists $75 as the price for tickets in New York and Cleveland, and at deadline, prices were unavailable for the other posted tour stops. Tickets for the New York and New Jersey shows will only be available through Ticketmaster's online and phone outlets. An interesting change from Springsteen's past arena tours will find fans in a general admission setting (no seats) on the floor of each venue "to add looseness and excitement" to the show, according to Springsteen's manager, Jon Landau. Additionally, fans in major cities will have to wait until 2003 for the Boss to play multiple-night stands at their local venue. "Our approach is to bring the music out to as wide a cross section of the country as we could [during the tour's first leg]," Landau said. "So we're taking this barnstorming approach - one city, one show." "The Rising" tour will kick off Aug. 7 in New Jersey, a little more than a week after the album of the same name is released. Springsteen and the E Street Band will play North American shows through Oct. 7, then hit Europe between Oct. 14-27. The second leg of the North American run will kick off Nov. 3 in Dallas and last through mid-December. - - -- Barry A. The U2 floor worked so well because of the heart shaped design that allowed a limited amount of fans in the center so there wasn't a massive push to the front of the stage. There was a push around the outside still, but it was still an improvement. Bob Dylan's last tour was a standing room floor also, but the last 25% of the floor was chairs for an older crowd to go back and relax on. Dylan wasn't nearly as intense or as close to sold out as Bruce is, so that's also a factor. It'll be interesting... - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 11:17:43 -0400 From: "Bernardo, Thomas" Subject: An Impressive Night at the Pony If you can't stomach yet another lengthy, blowhard review of a recent listening party, then simply skip over my post. It's nothing more than one person's take on last night's party in Asbury Park. With that disclaimer in place . . . To be honest, I didn't think I'd have such a strong reaction to the listening party. After all, how much can you *really* take away from one listen? At best, it's a superficial opinion, especially since Bruce's work is best understood and appreciated after repeated listening over a period of time. In fact, I don't think I've ever liked an album or song of his after only one listen. For a number of years, I didn't care for "Nebraska." To this day, however, that album -- which is arguably my favorite Springsteen album -- continues to reveal itself in subtle, graceful ways. The listening party consisted of the following tunes . . . 1) Lonesome Day 2) Into the Fire 3) Nothing Man 4) Waitin' on a Sunny Day 5) Further On (Up the Road) 6) Mary's Place 7) The Fuse 8) The Rising Comments: Although I've only heard 6 of the above songs on a single occasion, I can confidently say that, across the board, I was very impressed. The writing, particularly, was exceptional. Several of these songs are full of striking and indelible imagery. Bruce paints pictures, albeit some abstract, that follow the cardinal rule of writing: show don't tell. That is to say, he allows emotions and thoughts to hang on an image, as opposed to spelling it out for his audience. This necessitates the listener investing him- or herself into the art and getting something back in return. Very powerful. Most of the writing borders on the sparse but is by no means Raymond Carver-type minimalism, which is at times void of emotion and feeling. I was struck by how musically diverse the 8 songs were. While Arlen Schumer has recently set forth some legitimate complaints regarding the structure of the title track, I'm not so sure that song is entirely reflective of the rest of the album, at least from a musical standpoint. This is Bruce and the E Streeters in 2002 creating a fresh, full sound. It's *very* different from anything they've done before. Those expecting a recycled effort of '78 or '84 are in for a surprise and/or a disappointment. Frankly, I don't want to hear a contemporary Springsteen album that sounds like something he's offered before. And I can never understand why some of his fans insist on a 52-year-old Bruce sounding and acting like he did when he was in his 20s and 30s. Without personally knowing him, we do know enough about his life (from what he has told us through his work or in interviews) and his artistic evolution to say that he has undoubtedly matured in virtually every aspect of his life, particularly post-BITUSA. I prefer something authentic and true to what Bruce and the band have to wholly offer as artists and musicians to the here and now. I want them to capture the true essence of how they're moved and inspired today, as opposed to putting something out there that's safe and familiar. In the end, the music is very difficult to conveniently place in the comfortable categories of the past (e.g., Does it sound like "Tunnel of Love"? How about "Darkness," does it have the 'edge' of some of those songs? Does it have the catchy flavor of "Born in the USA"? etc.). Leave the categorization to the intellectually lazy; this album is most definitely something different, yet it retains the power and substance of what makes this band so special. Bruce's phrasing on some of the songs, particularly "Nothing Man," is really a marvel. And it seemed that Bruce had a different voice for every song. Personally, I think his voice is better than it has *ever* been. Since the Tom Joad tour, it's as if the guy has really learned the subtle and genuine art of using his voice as an instrument, as opposed to just belting every song out at some teeth-clenched-neck-chord-bulging rate. Some of the phrasing is unorthodox but unique and original. You get the overwhelming impression that you're hearing a man writing and performing his music with a full mastery of his craft. This aspect of the album may go unnoticed to the masses, but, from a artistic craft perspective, several of the songs I heard last night were nothing short of awe-inspiring. 1) LONESOME DAY -- At this point, most fans have heard this song. It's a great leadoff tune with some deceptively downer lyrics. As I've said before, I think the song is performed and sung with more of a personal feel than, say, "The Rising," which, granted, is far more anthemic and glorious. 2) INTO THE FIRE -- Probably my favorite song of the night, and the one that literally -- wah, wah -- moved me on a deeper level. I'll leave it at that. Bruce dials up a few different voices here and uses repetition in the chorus to reinforce a very hopeful theme. Sort of bluesy in sound, but that description doesn't do it justice. 3) NOTHING MAN -- As mentioned before, very complex phrasing and rhyming patterns here. Unlike the traditional A-B, A-B couplet. This is a song, however, that warrants more listens to properly comment on it. I will say that you can definitely hear Brendan O'Brien's influence on this song, sonically and production-wise. 4) WAITIN' ON A SUNNY DAY -- Very catchy, semi-bouncy type tune (nice piano work by Roy on this one), but there's something in Bruce's singing and the lyrics which is almost sadly reflective. The song nicely breaks up the intensity of the first 3 tunes on the album, but is, by no means, Bruce-lite. 5) FURTHER ON (UP THE ROAD) -- Probably my 2nd favorite of the night. Much more fully realized, musically, than heard on the last tour. Doesn't follow the slow-start-break-into-song recipe that many fans have criticized. Very strong song, lyrically. Guitar driven from the first note. A few layers of gritty guitars, in fact, and some exceptional drumming by Max. 6) MARY'S PLACE -- I liked it, but wasn't in love with it in the way that most Bruce fans are. Just my opinion after one simple listen. As the song progressed, it grew on me, though. The song's ending will be exceptional live in concert. It's got a fun, sing-along, call-and-response ending which harkens back to party tunes like "Sherry Darling" and "Rosalita," but may suffer from a hint of derivation. It's a distant cousin of those tunes and should be a lot of fun at the shows. 7) THE FUSE -- A definite burner tune brimming with an edgy lust and desire. Something raw and primal about it, too. At one point, the music completely stopped, you hear an audible gasp by Bruce before he and the music kicks back into the song's final verse. The woman next to me was clutching her head in some sort of trance after this tune. Her hands were shaking as she lit up her cigarette. 8) THE RISING -- Continues to grow on me. Time may prove this song to be a great one. I've commented on its music and lyrics already, and you guys have all heard it several times, so I'll spare you my take. Sorry for such a long message. I'm still trying to digest last night. Again, although I've only heard some of the music once, it really was impressive. Definitely looking forward to 7/30 and the rest of my life to savor this album. It's going to be special. Thanks for taking the time to read. I think that making the entire floor of CAA or MSG or any big arena is just plain nuts! I think that with alot of perseverence and a little luck lots of people managed to get "jaibait" seats at face value last tour. And being one of those people I remember what it felt like at stage rush time when...okay..I was lucky enough to be in 1st row (thanks to the unmentionable "gone but not forgotten" MIB's) and getting squashed by only 3 rows of people....very uncomfortable and HOT! What's it going to be like when the whole floor is an entire "stage rush"? I can't even imagine...I just know I'm too old for that mess! It seems to ME that Bruce is aiming towards a "younger" audience by doing this which would explain alot..... I, as usual, will just be happy to be there. I will have a great time wherever I sit if I'm lucky enough to get tickets. But We're not talking about Convention Hall in AP now...we're talking about ARENAS...masses of people... and as much as I love Bruce, I don't have a clue why he's doing things this way? Sure there is going to be excitement...there is also going to be mass hysteria with people camping out all night and day to get in soon enough to get close to the stage. That is usually accompanied by a certain amount of "bad feeling" (not to mention again...discomfort...which is a good reason to be grumpy! I personally don't think this is fun....I hope it changes for the 2003 part of the tour. Hopefully this is a "hit or miss" trial thing... Now remember...this is just my humble opinion. Any thoughts? General admission shows can be dangerous, over packed and very uncomfortable. what are they thinking ?? This is a move to pack more people on the floor and make more money at the expense of the fans - period. like it or not " ITS A DOG EAT DOG FIGHT TO THE FRONT " that's what makes it dangerous, Now its a different game for tickets...Im curious how long we will all have to stand in line to get a good place on the floor??... 2-3 days...mabe a week....?? at the very least all day, thats the really tough part. They claim this will reduce scalping. " yea right "...actually , it will dramatically increase the price of scalped ticked in the seated areas, making it tougher on us....not the scalper, you can bet hes going to make his money. It may also spoil the ticket drops ( which are happening for almost all concerts now here ). why would they have ticket drops now??? good side seats will be in such great demand....dont look for them to ticket drop those on the last day, and any general addmission ticket thats involved in a ticket drop may make it tough, because you should already be in line early, just to get into show... too funny, it will be interesting to see how this plays out I still cant wait to see bruce and the boys, but with waiting in line all day ( at least ) and standing for show for 3-4 hours.....its going to make for a brutal day for some. I WILL adapt for the greatest show on earth. I will really probably spend an arm and a leg for a good side seat, and sit at the bar why the rest of you are waiting in line for a day or two. some cities including mine still don't allow general admission of concerts (since 16 people were trampled at a Who concert back in the late 70s) , I wonder if this will be an issue, or if it had anything to do as to what cities hes playing. just a few thoughts...(you asked) cheers to all Larry [text/html attachment deleted] - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 13:24:12 +0300 From: "Evi Eleftheriadou " Subject: General Admission Greetings from Athens, Greece to all LTowners out there, Glad and excited to have a reason to post again after the 1999 tour! The GA policy is a BLESSING! Cannot begin to tell what a difference it makes and what a better overall experience the show is. I had the chance to see this on the '99 tour, being at the front row in Barcelona and Berlin, where it was GA and then way back on the floor in London. The show may have been the same but my enoying it was totally different. London was "boring" in comparison - if you can ever say this for a Bruce show. Like I posted back then: Go early and get to the front, as close as you can. Just seeing the smiles and the expressions on Bruce's face is worth the price of admission and the hours of waiting for the doors to open. Dont be afraid of the crowd, you know it will not be young - in Barcelona yes, but not in the US! I was extremely fortunate to be inside U2's heart -what a fantastic idea for a concert - in Dublin last August and this was another show for the ages! On another note, the head of SONY Greece was flown to London last month along with many SONY Europe executives to listen to the album. I talked to him afterwards and he was blown away. He expects the album to be a big hit. He is not a fan at all, he didnt even feel like going. Bruce was there, too, unannounced. Take care old friends, c u on the road :-) Evi E Street Band power!
