Can't thing of anything Jay said that I disagree with. Overall, it's a good album, although many of the lyrics don't fit such upbeat melodies. Very motown/soul and sixties pop influenced (which I like). Some strings sound Beatle-esque too. Some songs are rather morbid, depressing, and have a few too many religious overtones for me. My top tracks (in order): 1. Waiting on a Sunny Day 2. Countin' on a Miracle 3. Further Up The Road (he sings in his "Born to Run/Darkness" voice!!!!!) 4. Mary's Place 5. My City of Ruins (great version) and for some reason, The Fuse is very catchy. I like The Rising, but the song has to many "li li lis" for me. Wait until you hear the sax/guitar blends. My first reaction was, "what instrument is that" before I concluded that the sax and guitar are playing the exact same notes. Either than, or it's an interesting synthesizer. Some thoughts for the tour: Opening song to get the crowd going might be The Fuse. Look for several obscure tracks to be added in -- including "Chimes of Freedom," "Missing" (not to be confused with "You're Missing"), "Souls of the Departed," and "Back In Your Arms Again." "Further On Up The Road" is a good solid closer, and yes, on this CD, he sings in in a voice from back in the BTR/Darkness days!!!! It is always interesting to read other peoples takes on what is going on with Bruce and how this impacts people and their lives. And it is fun to discuss and agree or disagree on these takes. I was reading Thom Engel's post and was agreeing with it pretty much until he went into his Dennis Miller rant about how we do not owe Bruce anything. Hmmm...well no we don't owe Bruce anything, literally anyway. But I suspect many of us owe him things that cannot be translated very easily. Throughout our lives we experience highs and lows. And not once during those low peiords of my life could I not put on a Bruce record and feel better. So do I owe him figurately? No. But do I owe him spiritually for having gotten me through some tough times. Yes of course. Some people approach Bruce's music as entertainment, that is fine, I don't have a problem with that. But for me it has gone way past entertainment. The music becomes a part of you to a point that it is within you and you use it as touchpoints in your life, whether those touchpoints are sharing it in your joys or in relying on it in your tribulations. That to me is why I owe Bruce. As for the Newsweek article that was frustrated at the new cd The Rising, partly because it sounded relatively the same or wasn't fresh. All I can say is that I once went to a House of Blues concert and saw John Fogerty. It was right after his release of Blue Moon Swamp I think. Anyway he commented at the concert how one of the local critics said his music sounded too much like Creedence Clearwater. Fogerty's response was WEll DUHHHHHHHH! And so it should be with Bruce. His music while different on this CD will still fundamentally and uniquely sound of him. And I don't want that to change. As for Tony.....you see this as the worst album of Bruce's career? And you are using Man's Job as coutnerpoint? I really enjoyed seeing Man's Job played in concert. But as for the song standing on its own, no way. Every song I have heard off the Rising are far superior to that throwaway song. But then this is the Luckytown digest and we all do have our opinions. As for me I am just waiting for tuesday. Peace to everyone and keep posting. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 10:15:15 -0400 From: "Natoli, Joe" Subject: What is Happening on 7/30 in Asbury Park? You can't please everyone so just please yourself and may the pieces fall where they may. I got a copy of the album 3 days ago (no I did not put it on Kazaa and yes I will be at Tower Tuesday morning around 9:15 to buy my 8th consecutive Bruce release on it's first day in the stores) and have listened to it about 5 times. There are a couple songs that I don't enjoy as much as the others but does that mean they are no good because I don't enjoy them? Waiting on a Sunny Day and Counting on a Miracle are great songs. My City of Ruins is more like the original version I heard a year and a half ago in Asbury Park. I love both versions the same but for different reasons. Let's Be Friends is another gem. The melodies Bruce is writing makes the musician in me smile. As for the topic, they are broad enough that you can get your own meaning out of them. There is no line saying how the WTC came down or "Let's Roll". Saying that the 9/11 connection means you can't enjoy the song 10 months later is perhaps the stupidest thing I have ever read on this forum. I guess that means people don't enjoy listening to "Ohio" by CSNY anymore since it happened so long ago. Since I was conceived right around the time of Kent State, can I not appreciate the song on many levels. I think this is going to be a big seller for Bruce. Does this make me happy? Yes it does. Not because Bruce will make a good chuck of change for it (he has enough money) but because a new generation will get to know Bruce. I discovered him at the time of Born In The USA (sorry, I was 13). But it sent me back to his earlier albums where I found gems like Spirit in the Night, Wild Billy's Circus Story, and Prove It All Night. I hope that many people who think Bruce is the guy who wrote that AIDS song will get the chance to know more about an artist who shows his importance in the arts and the community 30 years after he was Blinded By The Light. Now if only I could find two tickets to a show and introduce my wife of 4 months to Bruce and the boys that bring me to tears when I hear If I Should Fall Behind. "production (is a) "wall of mud"." "this album is a B grade outtake album" "worst album of his career" "he has dropped the ball." ""Bruce has lost it.""Springsteen should have let this album sit for another six months and then listened to it again. He would have reached the inevitable conclusion,"Gee, these melodies and this sound just doesn't cut it". " >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> etc., etc. Well you are entitled to your venomous opinion Tony, but it's just a collection of songs and you don't need to stress that much over it. Find some other music that is worthy of your intellect. Listen to that instead of re-visiting repeatedly what you find so horrible. Bruce has been making quality music for quite a while. Why not take a deep breath and give him a little credit for knowing just a little bit about what he is doing? I suspect Tony would be well served to take his own 'advice' to Bruce and wait 6 months before he forms such a strong negative opinion of this work and of the artist. I say let it sink in after a few more listens. For every album I have ever heard of Bruce I never liked many of the songs I have heard. They only started to sound good after I listened to some of them, what, 5 times? 10 times? And by several more listens I go crazy thinking, aw man, how could I have missed a brilliant bunch of songs? "I Wish I Were Blind" was a song I totally ignored after a couple of listens. I only fell in love with it, man....a year later? And ugly. ________________________ And about the Today contest: Castille is a "type" of soap which originated in Castile, Spain, it is not a "brand" But more importantly, the really stupid, ignorant question was, "Before he became a rock star, Bruce worked as a________" The correct answer would have been "a musician" It has always been stated that while other people (like MIami, who WAS a houspainter, and George Theiss) were working day jobs, Bruce was "honing his art". He did pump gas, and I saw something about being a gardner, but in all my books, and in all other stuff, I never saw "housepainter", altho I vaguely remember seeing "something". The other answers, were, of course, a joke, but just the way it was worded was annoying, and made it seem like a trick question. And of course, it seems like one day Bruce got tired of painting houses, so he became a rock star. "Overnight Sensation" as the great Raspberries would say. The other day I posted a reply on a non-music message board with regards to why so many rock and roll music nowadays are so boring. I said well, there's a new Bruce Springsteen album coming out at the end of July, and that I heard 3 of the songs via the official site and I found them to be very good and very interesting. Almost immediately I was hammered by other people saying Bruce's new music is "boring crap". Needless to say, I was really taken aback by the sheer contempt at my post. And to be honest, outside of this list, I have met very VERY few who come close to appreciating Bruce's music as much as I do. When I mention Bruce on other mailing lists or message boards I get mostly just silence and once in a while, a post full of contempt like the one I mentioned above. In college, I was only one of maybe 2 or 3 people who liked Bruce's music, and now at work, it seems I am the only one. What is going on? Why is it so difficult for many people to "get" Bruce? His music is powerful, emotional, and most importantly, his music matters. I wrote something about Bruce and my appreciation for his music at my blog, if anyone's interested.... http://www.alanguilan.com/sanpablo/wbnormal.html :) Gerry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 17:49:22 -0700 From: Jennifer Brindle Subject: CA 9/11 impact "Barnett, Karen" wrote: >Someone from CA also mentioned that the events of that day did not have too >much impact on their direct, daily lives. And I'm not talking about increased security or the obvious terrorism news. The current economic situation in the US is directly linked to the 9/11 attack. Just when we were pulling out of the stock market fiasco of late 2000/2001, 9/11 comes. Most of us here who have jobs are praying that we keep them. Joe I owe you a beer at the pre show get > together. Tom, This was exactly the reason I started the LABS Fan Network with a post on this digest 3 years ago...To help fellow Bruce fans get tickets to West Coast shows. Normally, we use high-tech methods. Last weekend, fearing the worst, we went low-tech and drove 300 miles to wait in line all night for Texas Station to start selling tickets. It paid off for everyone involved and your story is one of my favorites b/c I had invited you several times and then finally when you did join us, you got great seats! That's the way it's supposed to work! But, you know what, the fun isn't going to stop there. Traditionally, the LABS Fan Network has a tailgate party before West Coast Bruce concerts. The problem with tailgating in Las Vegas is that it would be Las Vegas. In the middle of the day. In the middle of August. Where the thermometer will probably exceed 100 degrees. So, what to do? I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting a "tailcatering" party at the Thomas and Mack Center before the concert. For $25 per person, we will be having an indoor buffet with a cash bar (where you pay for your own drinks). The event would be held in a private room on the ground floor of the Thomas and Mack Center. We are tentatively scheduling the start time for 3:30 and it will last 3 hours. Anticipating that the GA line will probably be run, in some fashion, like the drop line where you sign-in and show up for the hourly roll call, those of you with GA tickets should be able to attend. Attending the party will not get you "inside the arena" portion of the building any sooner though as everyone will be required to exit the meeting room section and enter through the main doors. For 25 bucks per person, you'll get a "relatively" private party with your fellow Bruce fans, and a decent meal, all in an air-conditioned environment. Of course, cold beer will be available at an almost-reasonable price. What more could you ask for? We have done everything possible to make this as affordable as possible while still getting us a decent meal. Because of the way T&M charges for certain features, there is a chance there may be a small amount of money left depending on the number of people we have attending. In that event, we will donate the remainder to some organization like the Clark County Food Bank, a 9-11 Victims Fund or something like it. However, this is not designed to be a fundraising event. It's just the easiest way to deal with any leftover money. Anyone desiring to attend should let me know privately via email with the subject "LABS-LTD Vegas Tailcate" ASAP. Thanks! If you have any questions, just ask! :) Joe ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2002 10:28:44 -0400 From: "Deborah Robinson" Subject: MADAME MARIE IN ASBURY PARK ON JULY 30 ANTIC HAY BOOKS & THE "SAVE THE STONE PONY" COMMITTEE PROUDLY PRESENT ASBURY PARK'S MOST FAMOUS FORTUNE TELLER MADAME MARIE MADAME MARIE, IMMORTALIZED IN THE LYRICS OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN ["SANDY (4TH OF JULY ASBURY PARK)"] WILL MAKE A RARE, SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCE AT ANTIC HAY BOOKS ON TUESDAY, JULY 30 AT NOON.
