This would go against what we've read in all the interviews that The Rising songs were written shortly before or after September 11. It's easy to accept how Waitin On A Sunny Day may have been around for a few years, but Nothing Man's lyrics would seem to suggest that it could have only been written recently." According to Bruce himself in the excellent interview in Uncut magazine recently, Nothing Man was indeed written in 1994. (In some ways it makes me think of 'Local Hero' -- but one not feeling worthy of the attention and praise heaped upon him.) Maybe he changed the lyrics a bit after Sept 11th but had the basis of the song before then? Jackie ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 00:38:22 EDT From: ALateJuliet@aol.com Subject: City By the Sea I went to see the new Robert DeNiro movie tonight, City By the Sea. It was filmed in Asbury Park. There's lots of beachfront and boardwalk footage, and the Casino is featured as well. There are some scenes I'd swear were filmed inside the Palace or Casino, but in reality it was probably a movie soundstage. I read somewhere that the graffitti-covered doors on the outside of the Casino and boardwalk shops were done by artists for the movie, and were taken down when filming was done. The movie really captures how desolate Asbury really is. More than once, there's a line in the movie where the actors say "This used to be beautiful." The movie opened with a scruffy guy looking very much like a 1973-74 Bruce, walking down the boardwalk, holding a guitar without a case. Wonder where the producers got THAT idea from! ; ) The movie is based on a true story. It takes place in the town of Long Beach, NY (which actually exists). While DeNiro was good (as usual), I don't think this is an Oscar winner for him, but I found it intriguing and suspenseful, and would recommend it at least for the Asbury footage. In #87, Eric Oldham wrote about a priest talking about The Rising during the sermon in church and playing "Into the Fire", and how amazed he was. A similar thing happened to a friend of mine in synagogue ... on Yom Kippur. The cantor sang Into the Fire, and had the congregation join in on the lines May your strength give us strength May your faith give us faith May your hope give us hope May your love give us love I'm telling you, Bruce is gonna bring us all together. Some 20 years ago, I attended Fordham, and saw and heard some pretty interesting things in the Rose Hill Chapel. One week, an extremely conservative Jesuit might be sermonizing, the next week the pulpit might be held by a very liberal Jesuit. I think I learned more from the contrasts presented to me there than at any other time in my life. So it doesn't surprise me that the masses in the Chapel might include songs from The Rising. On a some what related note, I seem to recall the chapel becoming the center of the campus the night John Lennon was killed. My memory of the night is both vivid in its intensity and blurred around details. I clearly remember Vin Scelsa announcing on WNEW-FM that Lennon had been shot. He awkwardly stumbled into playing "Jungleland" which he stopped somewhere in the middle to announce that Lennon was dead. Soon, Sclesa's pain was far too much for me to bear. I had to turn off the radio, and study for my statistics final the next day. As word of Lennon's death spread, so did the news that a mass had been arranged for 11:30 PM in the chapel. All I remember is a highly distraught Jesuit tryng to say a mass for a highly distraught group of students. I've been to several weddings at the chapel since. But everytime I go I remember that December 1980 night. It's where I went when Lennon died. In September 2001, the chapel again became a center of focus as Fordham mourned the loss of many (I forget the number, but it was considerable, 50 or more) alums in the WTC attack. Eric might know a lot more about this, but it doesn't surprise me that The Rising was included in a mass. In fact, I like it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 18:38:02 +0200 From: "Linda" Subject: To those who complain Sent this 10th August but I never saw it appear in the Digest... maybe it did and if so I apologise for repeating, if it didn't here it go again cause it still seems to fit the issues. To all those who complain or criticise, sure, you got every right in the world to criticise (by all means, cause I myself has never liked people who says about anyone "all he does is great"), but my feelings are split, cause I also feel it's spoiled old Bruce fans who complain. I take your complaining almost as an insult personally. I have severe epilepsy and I'll probably never even be able to see one of Bruce shows, ever. It's one of my dreams, but it won't happen. And if it does happen, I'll be grateful even if it's one hour and all he does is mumble. I think some of you are so used to his greatness, so used to see so many shows through the years, you can't be grateful for the moment, right there, right then. Instead you want that special song you wish to hear, cause you've heard him so many times you want that something extra to get a thrill. Hey, I may be wrong, and I may be bitter, I'm not attacking anyone specific, but I'm a bit sick of hearing so many spoiled Bruce fans complaining, when there's people who never even has seen one show. Anyone who has the chance to see the Flatlanders SHOULD not miss this show. Obviously Bruce is a huge Joe Ely fan and so am I. >> Me too, I discovered Joe accidentally around the same time as Bruce thru an obscure (but great) Austin bands cd salute to Jo Carol Pierce (an Austin songwriter who was, at one time, married to Jimmy Dale Gilmore) called "Across The Great Divide" where he did a song of hers called "Queen of Heaven" and played all the instruments including drums guitar and organ. There are several pictures of Joe and Bruce playing together on Joe's website. But I hate to add that the sum of 3 great talents (Joe, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock) whom I've had the pleasure of seeing live at the Bottom Line (hmm, that name.....) does not match the incredible unique talents that each one possesses, and 3 unique voices. While the Beatles as a whole were much greater than their individual talents, It ain't so with these Texas troubadors. They've released 3 excellent albums of new music since 1989, and have toured behind each one playing new music. The current tour is, I admit, mostly a greatest hits tour, but not in the usual sense. The Stones are as powerful, sexy, and creative as ever. They can reinterpret or reinvigorate older stuff, and a Stones show is as vibrant a concert experience as you can ask for. I saw them twice this past weekend in Philly, and am excited about the shows in NY this coming week. Bad example, TomJoad, to support an otherwise valid point. It's also worth noting , with only one UK show many folks were simply too far away to get to London to get tix (a shame that unlike other countries Bruce has chosen to play London rather than a more central city : Brum, Mcr, Sheff).... However.... The wembley show should be a blast, having seen Bruce many times in London before I moved here to the US the shows were always amongst the best of the euro legs.. and thank god its not at Earls court..tho MEN is the best venue in the UK now which I feel would have been a better locale for a one off (tho obv that would've been too logical or fan-conscious for Harvey Goldsmith..) Anyway, please post a review of the show, sure to be a great one, hopefully i'll manage a trip back to the uk to co-incide with next years shows..
