The band has NEVER sounded this good. The setlist changed for the better. She's The One, Ties That Bind, For You (slow with Bruce at the piano) an absolutely smokin' Ram Rod and a guest solo from home-town boy Eddie Vedder on "My Hometown". This was the best show I have EVER seen. I'd like to think my son has inherited (at least part of) his passion for music from my Bruce fanatacism. He feels the same way about Pearl Jam that I do about Bruce. When Eddie came out, together with Bruce on-stage the 2 most respected people in our lives. Unbelievable. This one I want to savor for a l o n g time. I can die a happy man. Bruce has rewarded us yet again. Cheers. It so happened that I was staying just round the corner from Stargreen, so I went round in the morning to check just in case... sometimes you get lucky I suppose..... In a different note - currently in Milwaukee after experiencing my 1st pit experience of the tour...after seeing Kansas from way back and Chicago from high up in the 'nose bleed' seats, I was determined to make the effort here in Milwaukee. I arrived just after 09.00 and found myself No. 146 in line. The queue was superbly organised by two guys who's names I can't remember, but deserve a lot of credit for making everything go so smoothly...with roll calls every two hours there was plenty of oppurtunities to go for meal breaks etc, and everyone co operated. The same applied once inside the pit itself...plenty of room and no pushing or unpleseantness. As for the show , I think the set list speaks for itself...and seeing it so close made the long wait wothwhile...Little Queenie at the end was just amazing, and shows Bruce remembers his history... Is anyone intending to organise the GA line in London ? Assuming that the same arrangements apply as have done so far, something will need to be done to keep control of the situation ! Be interested to hear what other people think....off to Fargo now... Finally had a chance to sit down and catch up on LTDs and jot a brief note about Denver. The setlist, which seemed to be fairly inflexible up to this point, was a surprise: The Ties that Bind, Candy's Room, Racing in the Street. and I'm a Rocker. The crowd seemed to love Candy's Room, but I thought Racing in the Street surpassed it. It seemed to resonate with The Rising material much more, in my opinion. I'm a Rocker, which preceded Ramrod, was pure energy and abandon. I know some have criticized the show and the setlist, but I found it truly inspiring. On the down side, I hate seeing Bruce around his birthday. It seemed like every time there was a quiet, poignant moment in the show some yahoo had to scream out "happy birthday Bruce!" Thankfully, he ignored most of the shouts. Of course they were - tickets are now changing hands on E-bay for up to 250 pounds each. My wife and I have decided to take a holiday in Barcelona to catch him there (we were lucky enough to get tickets). Anyway, I'm not one to grumble about this (alright maybe a little...) but at the end of the day I'm sure Mr Springsteen would be a bit annoyed at whats going on. Without doubt some of us can afford to pay the sort of prices that are being quoted, and I don't begrudge somebody making a profit; but there are many people out there desperate to see the gig that just can't afford to. Lets hope that this doesn't happen next year. Anyway, all this said, a message for Bruce : give it your all at Barcelona!!! We'll see you there! __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? There is a Neptune Boulevard in Long Beach. I'm not familiar with Long Beach Island, so it was amusing to me that Asbury Park was chosen to represent that town in the movie. What does Long Beach look today anyway? Maybe it was easier to shoot a movie in Asbury, because the town is so desolate. Many of the scenes were indeed shot inside the Palace and the Casino, along the Asbury boardwalk, and throughout the nearby area. If you watched closely, you could often see Palace signs in the backgrounds of various shots. In one restaurant scene, you could see the reflection on the window of the half-completed high-rise building (which could be clearly seen in several other shots). Naturally, several scenes were altered for the movie, such as the excess graffiti and the sign in front of the "Long Beach Police Station." However, they did make one glaring error...At one point in the film, 2 characters agree to meet (or a cop radios in his position - I forget the exact situation) at the corners of Neptune and Ocean Aves. I'm fairly certain that this intersection does not exist in Long Beach. I enjoyed the movie, but agree that it's no Oscar winner. I got more enjoyment out of picking out the various Asbury locals that I recognized. Paul Cain, in writing about "The First Amendment Center presents: Freedom Sings at the Bluebird Cafe," described Greg Trooper as "Nashville's own." Actually, Greg hails originally from Little Silver, NJ (the town neighboring Rumson, now home to Bruuce, and also my hometown). As a kid I played baseball in my friend's yard while my friend's brothers and their friends jammed on the porch of their home. Among those friends was Greg Trooper. If I recall correctly, Trooper was part of a neighborhood band they put together called the Little Silver Swamp Boys who once opened for Springsteen at a show performed at Red Bank Catholic High School. Small world. First, the political right have been looking for an excuse to hang Earle for years. This is mainly in response to his tireless work in denouncing America's use of the death penalty. 'John Walker's Blues' has given them the excuse they were looking for. Secondly, 'Paradise' (as with many songs on the album) is very much ambiguous. Even the line "Plastics, wire ..." isn't put in any distinct context. 'John Walker's Blues', on the other hand, is worded in such a way that it grabs one's attention. Despite this, you judge which one is the more radical - 'Paradise' is an insight into the mind of a bomber (who likely killed hundreds, or even thousands). 'John Walker's Blues' is an insight into the mind of one American (who likely didn't kill anybody). Lastly, and following on from the last point, we should perhaps remember the Bruce quote (probably paraphrased), "It's not that people aren't taught to think, it's just that they're not taught to think hard enough". Craig ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 16:43:26 -0600 From: "Rob Carnachan" Subject: Denver and KC A few thoughts on the two shows I saw this week in Denver and Kansas City. By now, most of you know about the setlists and the rarities that were performed. I sat in the upper deck at the Pepsi Center in Denver and was on the floor (but not in the pit) at the Kemper Arena in KC. What a difference! The sound from the floor in KC was simply incredible! I could hear each instrument clearly in the overall mix, in contrast to the sonic sludge in the upper deck in Denver (though even here, the sound was better than it was on the Reunion Tour). It could be that Kemper Arena has inherently better acoustics than the Pepsi Center (it was my first time in either venue), but I would guess that the difference was primarily due to my location. Even if you don't try to get into the pit area, the GA floor option is well worth the effort simply for the remarkable sound. Of the two shows, the KC show was definitely more inspired and energetic, though the Denver show was very good. The version of "Something in the Night" played at Kemper was breathtaking, and note perfect. "Incident" was amazing -- I didn't know Bruce could play piano that well. I had never heard of this song being performed acoustically before, only in a full band version. Can anyone tell me the last time it was performed as a solo piano number (if it ever was)? The final encore of "Kansas City" was as inspired a performance as I've ever seen from the band -- it seemed a throwback to the cover song-rich theatre shows from the "Born to Run" and "Darkness" tours of the 70s. Jon Landau was even dragged out onto the stage with a guitar in his hand for some rather anemic strumming (was his amp even turned on?!) at the end. The KC show was easily the longest thus far on the tour, timing at just under 3 hours (including the very weird "Countin' on a Miracle" video at the end); Denver was 2:35 also including the video. One question for any KC residents out there (I live in Denver): any thoughts on why Kemper Arena wasn't sold out? The entire section behind the stage was unsold, as were the upper portions of all sections along stage left (upper deck) and the back of the arena. The Denver show was filled to the rafters without an empty seat in sight. Unless I'm mistaken, both the Denver and KC metro areas have about the same population (2 million), so why the difference? This was the first Bruce show I've ever been to that wasn't sold out (that's a lot of shows in several states). Bad promotion perhaps? You can't turn on the radio in Denver without hearing "The Rising", so it can't be for a lack of radio play (unless rock radio in KC is considerably different from rock radio in Denver). Regardless of the crowd size, the KC show was one of the best I've ever seen. It made the 500-mile drive (each way) totally and completely worth it! I have two interpretations of the word "me": 1) When Bruce is singing this, he is implying that it is the character in the song who is lonely, that it is the character who identifies with Roy Orbinson's lonely audience 2) When Bruce is singing this part, he is implying that it is either Bruce himself or the character of the song, who just happens to sing, that is similar to Roy Orbinson singing for the lonely. In other words, Bruce or the character in the song is like Roy in that Bruce/the character is singing for the lonely Any thoughts would be much appreciated...
