There are lots of highly collectible Springsteen items in the auction, a few of which are still available at bargain prices, along with very nice items of special interests to fans of the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and others. Proceeds from the auction benefit the fight to save the Palace Amusements complex in Asbury Park for restoration. In three hours they squeezed in a majority of the songs from the new album, plus a number of rarities which to my knowledge appeared for the first time this tour--most notable, Bruce took to the piano for a rendition of "Lost In The Flood", "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch), and "Tougher Than The Rest". If I recall correctly Bruce also played piano for "Tougher." The only real downside to the whole show for me was the audience. It struck me as really disrespectful when Bruce requested "A little bit of quiet" for "Empty Sky" and "You're Missing", and also toward the end of the show he was talking about the war in our midst and talking seriously--random people in this crowd nonetheless kept yelling "BRUCE!" and screaming nonsense during these few moments of quiet, and that really took away from the overall enjoyability of the show for me. Springsteen nonetheless delivered beautifully once more, with three encores to cap a three hour show. The setlist below was taken from (http://www.xs4all.nl/~maroen/engels/bruce.html). The only addition I'd make is that "Badlands" was also played toward the end of the show but was not listed in this setlist. They may share similar views (although my guess is that Steve is more liberal) but Bruce is careful to downplay his politics to avoid any negative commercial effect. (One only needs to remember the Ronald Reagan use of BIUSA to know that's true. Steve Earle would have demanded he stop and use the attention to advance his political causes; Bruce was downright wimpy in trying to avoid turning off any Republican record buyers.). The ambiguity or subtleness of Paradise is evidence of this caution. Bruce went as far as he could go without drawing criticism from conservatives, and thereby potentially damaging the critical success of the album. After all, if he did that, all the flacking of the CD on the Today show and everywhere else would have been wasted, and he would have sold fewer $75 tickets (or whatever he's charging these days). When Michael Jordan was criticized for not being more activist, he said something like "Republicans buy sneakers too." Bruce shares that sentiment, and that's why there's a different reaction. Lynn [text/html attachment deleted] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Oct 2002 00:11:24 -0500 From: "Kevin Kinder" Subject: new virus FYI, I've had three reports this week from people receiving email that looks like the start of a luckytown digest, but had a worm/virus attached. In each case, the From: address was owner-luckytown-digest@ some (variable) domain OTHER than luckytown.org, and the email did NOT originate from my server. It appears there is a new worm spreading through the Internet called Bugbear, see also http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear@mm.html , which "can create a new message as a reply to or forward of an existing message on the infected system". That is going to be a nasty worm, taking Klez a step further by spoofing the From: address and making it impossible to identify it by a nonsensical Subject: line. Nowadays it's common sense if you're reading email on a Windows machine to have antivirus software installed and keep it up to date. Also, it's important to keep up with the Microsoft security patches available via Windows Live Update. Some number of you don't do either, judging by the number of virus emails I end up filtering out every day. I highly recommend that if you aren't using antivirus software, that you start. I recommend Norton Antivirus, but there are others out there. I've had infrequent questions the past few months from people receiving viruses with a From: address that looked like it came from luckytown.org. That's a symptom of the Klez worm replacing the From: address with another address gotten from Outlook, to hide the true sender of the email. FYI, since luckytown.org is run off of a Unix server, it's not susceptible to infection by the various worms going through the internet, which are all Windows-based. - ----- Kevin Kinder kinder@luckytown.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Oct 2002 21:47:05 -0400 From: Paul Romano Subject: Philly Show!! CDR Wanted.... Just wanted to share with you my impression of the recent Bruce show in Philly I attended. Since I also attended opening night at the Meadowlands, and was one of the people who expressed "disappointment" over that show, I want to give praise when praise is due. The Philly show was the kind of Bruce show we have come to love and look forward to. Well paced, lots of different songs, rarities, special moments (haven't seen mentioned yet how Bruce forgot Empty Sky, how he had to have Patti & Steve help him remember the song, how "Alzheimer (?sp) was setting in!!"). Great version of She's The One, Night, Does This Bus Stop, For You, Streets Of Philadelphia, and to end the show with Kitty's Back! Nearly three hours of the kind of music and performance that I love! Am glad I did break down and get tickets (originally had no plans on going especially after there was no variation in the set list the first few shows). All I can say is that if this trend continues, go see the show and get ready to have the great time we've come to expect at Bruce shows..... Now, who has a CDR of the show? I've got lots to trade! I couldn't agree with the following statement more: >Mary's Place: Many descriptions of this song are similar. People >characterize it as a frat rocker that's a weak cousin to "Rosalita." >Arrrrrgh!! This song is not a lightweight frat rocker, dammit! In >fact, >it's the most personal statement Bruce makes on the entire >record. I would have to disagree, though, with your interpretation of the lyrics as being about a seance. While there are certainly implications there that the narrator is trying to connect with his/her departed on a spiritual level, I think the party at Mary's Place is very *much* a real one. There, the narrator tries to take some comfort in the people around him/her and I find the following lyric particularly beautiful: I dream of you in my arms I lose myself in the crowd Reminds me of standing with y'all during the "This train..." part in Land of Hope and Dreams, when everyone's hands are in the air. I cry every time. Usually with these things it's just the album versions of all the songs played in the same order as the concert. But after the Buffalo concert they played live versions of all the songs played. The versions of the Rising songs sounded to me like some sort of soundboard mix. There seemed to be stereo seperation between instruments and very clear and upfront vocals. In addition to the Rising songs, Dancing in the Dark and No Surrender (among others) were also from this tour. So what ever show it was (it wasn't Buffalo) was very recent. The version of Further On Up the Road sounded like the 2000 Atlanta ALD version. And other songs (You can Look, Tougher That The Rest, etc.) were the official released versions. If it was an audience tape, it's by far the best I've heard from this tour and one of the best ever. Did anyone in Buffalo happen to tape this? I would love to get a copy of it. If you could edit out the annoying "97 Rock Bruce Springsteen Concert Replay" announcement made after almost every song, it might be worth having. Does any one know what the source was for the Rising tour songs? If the source tape is availible, I've got lots to trade. But there's another line that may have changed meaning since the song was first recorded. I'm referring to the lyric "...so you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore..." When the song was first released in the ''70's and Bruce was only in his twenties it seemed to mean that the couple was old enough to make their own decisions about their future. Now that Bruce is in his fifties (my how time flies when you're having fun), I think that the line could be construed as saying that we're really not that "young anymore" and maybe it's time to grab what we can get before it gets away from us. At least as a fifty-two year old fan, it seems that way to me. I'm really looking forward to the Dallas concert. This will be my eighth concert, which I realize doesn't seem like a lot compared to the many diehards, but I'm doing the best I can. And Bruce, keep For You on your set list at least for that night. It's one of my all time favorites and I really relate to that song, although for the life of me I don't know why. Also, is anyone making plans for a pre-concert get-together?
