My take on it is that it is a reference to Marion Vinyard's place. As most LTDers know, Tex and Marion Vinyard were longtime friends and supporters of Bruce. Bruce frequently thanked them publicly (including at the RnR-HOF induction ceremony). It is therefore hardly surprising that he would write a song for and about them, particularly this year when he was part of the dedication ceremonies for Vinyard Park in Freehold. Further support for my theory can be found, I think, in the fact that the Castilles used to practice at Marion's place and, in Bruce's words, Marion and Tex "allowed us to turn it up as loud as we wanted when all of the other adults were trying to get us to turn it down." Thus, the lyric "turn it up/turn it up/turn it up, etc." Also, this would have been a time of record players and 45s, as referenced in the lyrics. I look forward to hearing other people's views on this. Does anyone know whether Marion's place had a porch? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2002 22:28:24 -0700 From: "MICHAEL VOSS" Subject: Re: more on Mary's Place LuckyTown Digest V9 #97 Paul Chang wrote: the key line of the whole song to me is "Tell me how do you live broken-hearted?" -- As one who remains in this world, dealing with one's loss, how do we get on with our own lives after such tragic loss? I agree with everything you said, Paul (but I don't have a definitive answer on the "7 days" custom g ). It's far more than a simple rock and roll feel-good tune. Jeff Addicted to The Boss: Super fans can't get enough Even after 107 concerts, show in Buffalo is a night to remember Karen Bliss Special To The Star BUFFALO - Bruce Springsteen is more than The Boss to some people. "It replaces religion or family," says Jeff Cohen, co-owner of the Horseshoe Tavern and Lee's Palace, who has seen the New Jersey singer-songwriter 107 times. His comment would not be unusual among the folks who gathered early in the evening Oct. 6 outside HSBC Arena in Buffalo. They were lined up for one of about 300 coveted general admission spots in a special roomy section at the foot of the stage at the sold-out 19,400-capacity arena. The procedure is the same at all 46 stops on The Rising Tour - Springsteen's first in 18 years with his trusty E Street Band - and will continue through the sold-out Toronto show at Air Canada Centre on Dec. 5. They come with chairs and blankets and stories about previous Springsteen experiences. Two of them volunteer at each venue to keep "the list" of who is where in line so people can come and go without losing their places. "If I had the money, I would take all the 18-year rock bands in North America to a Springsteen show and go, `Okay, that's where the bar is set, if you want to consider yourself a truly great band,'" says Steve Jordan, an artist manager and former A&R representative at Warner Music Canada. "I could put it into words but it still wouldn't describe it." He tries. "Commitment, passion, emotion, quality, songs. It's an incredibly moving experience." Hardcore fans often sound as if they know what's on Bruce's mind (they refer to him on a first-name basis). "The man is 53 years old and he's shortened his concerts so that they're only two hours and 40 minutes," notes Jeff Ross, who owns more than 500 bootleg recordings. "He's not just doing it because there's a paycheque at the end of it. He loves doing it." They debate set lists, what he played, what he didn't, and attempt in their own methodical way to predict what he might perform that evening. "He tried to play `Paradise' last night in Philadelphia," says Napanee, Ont.'s Bill Daverne, 47, who has seen all the Rising shows to date, logged 20,000 miles in his 1996 Chevy Blazer and spent about $6,000. "He got about one chord out and went, `Ahhh, I don't know what I'm doing here, hold on a second,' and they huddled for about five minutes. They were trying to figure out the chords. He tried again but couldn't remember the chord progression and ended up doing the song that he normally does, which is `Empty Sky.' "`Paradise' is the one song off the new album (The Rising) he hasn't done yet," Daverne notes. "I predict that that's what he'll be doing (in Buffalo)." Dave Lorne, 31, from Hamilton, doesn't care what Springsteen plays. He and his buddy Rich ("Don't use my last name. I called in sick") just want the opportunity to see The Boss up close "without paying scalpers 500 bucks," so they came early to the Buffalo show to line up. Todd Draper, 29, from South Bend, Ind., and Ted Brych of Tom's River, N.J., are in charge of "the list." One of the two writes down a name and place in line on a specially designed chart and marks hands in thick black marker with a number (they stop around 300). Marked fans are told to check in again at 7 a.m., then 10 a.m., noon, then every hour after that until the venue opens. One gets the impression this important job makes Draper and Brych feel more connected to the show, that they are helping Bruce in some way. Draper won't go that far. "Someone had to take charge to do it and not many people are willing to put up with the trouble. (Between) me, Bill, Ted and Frank, we've covered every show" on The Rising Tour since it began Aug. 7 in East Rutherford, N.J. There is a definite sense of community and belonging. The Springsteen fanatics in Buffalo knew each other from other concerts and Internet exchanges. Cohen and Ross met at a Springsteen concert in November, 1992. Cohen was trying to hit on Ross's sister. He refuses to date anyone who is not a Springsteen fan. "It's just like if someone's Roman Catholic, they want to date someone who believes in Roman Catholicism," he says. Rosalba Reichl and husband Eric of Hamilton, numbers 21 and 22, feel the same way. "The only reason he went out with me is because I like Bruce," Rosalba acknowledges. "When I dated her, I didn't know what level she was at," he says matter-of-factly. Since 1978, he has seen 31 shows. She is well behind him with 16. When a Springsteen tour is announced, the couple figure out how many shows they can manage, both travel- and money-wise. "Our parents and siblings think we're nuts," Eric admits. At 6:15 p.m. security started letting the crowd in to the Buffalo show. They fastened two coloured bands to the wrist of those with a GA ticket. One provided access to the floor, the other the privilege of the front section, which amounted to a club atmosphere in the large venue. When the show started at 8:25, the Bruce disciples went nuts, high-fiving each other and beaming with excitement when he launched into something they wanted or didn't expect, like the tour premiers of "You Can Look" and "Tougher Than the Rest," and a rare piano version of "Lost In The Flood." Unless they planned to follow Springsteen to Europe, fans from the Buffalo line-up must wait until Nov. 3 for their next show, when the North American leg of the tour resumes in Dallas. Many of them will meet again in Toronto, where Ted, Tom, Bill or Frank will presumably be back in charge of the list. I think the review captures the spirit of a Bruce show better than just about anything I've seen for the current tour. It's not just a rock and roll show. It's a life affirming event. I too was standing, mimicking Bruce's body language in hopes that I would absorb not only the music but the message. Because of the subject matter and the message, this tour has been his most powerful. Like most of his fans, I love "Darkness.." and the '78 tour and the '75 tour. The Agora show and the Milwaukee Bomb scare shows are just 2 of the many concert masterpieces. But, and for some this is hard to beleive, he is better now. The message is either stronger or I am more receptive. I love the new stuff more today than when it first came out. My brother asked me if I could go back in time and see any of Bruce's shows, which would I pick. I told him that I just can't wait to see the next one. Hi there all, I just thought I'd share this with the community. My wife is 5 months pregnant, and the baby is just starting to kick around a bit (an amazing feeling, but that's not what this is all about). She has discovered that the baby responds to her singing. The baby seems to like certain (not all!!) childrens songs, but what really gets it going is when she sings along to a CD from Bruce... She says it's almost like it's dancing inside her (that would truely be dancing in the dark :-) It's really to bad we weren't able to get ticktets to the Rotterdam show, I would have loved to see what happens there :-) Ah well, next year if Bruce and the Band are coming around again we might just take it with us (little pair of black jeans on, little black shirt). Isn't this the youngest Bruce fan you've ever heard of? Keep Rocking! Hungerthon is a partnership between WHY, Infinity Radio and individual donors to raise money and awareness for the fight against hunger. The Hungerthon 2002 Benefit Concert tops off the week of hunger awareness with live performances by a great line-up of musicians, to be announced soon. World Hunger Year (WHY) was founded in 1975 by the late singer/songewriter Harry Chapin and radio disc jockey Bill Ayres. With tremendous ties to the media (and music business in particular) WHY, has been well-positioned to create awareness and raise funds for hunger and poverty. Over the years many musical artists have donated their time, talent, and money in support of WHY and its cause including Bruce Springsteen; Southside Johnny; Joe D'Urso; Pete Townshend; Eric Clapton; Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young; Steve Van Zandt; Nils Lofgren; Clarence Clemons; Max Weinberg; Gary Tallent; Gary U.S. Bonds; Carlos Santana; Willie Nile; Natalie Merchant; Phish; John Eddie; Bobby Bandiera; Melissa Etheridge; The Smithereens; Jon Bon Jovi; Graham Parker; The Moody Blues; Emerson, Lake, & Palmer; Phoebe Snow; Peter, Paul, and Mary; Tom Chapin; Jen Chapin; Richie Havens; Harry Belefante; Kenny Rogers; and many more. Hungerthon, is WHY's largest fund raising event, having raised nearly $6 million since 1975. Held each year around Thanksgiving and carried on all six Infinity Radio stations in the NYC tri-state area: WCBS-AM, WCBS-FM, WFAN-AM, WINS-AM, WNEW-FM, and WXRK-FM (K-ROCK); and on WCBS-Television (local station), it is WHY's largest annual public outreach, broadcasting to millions of people with essential information about hunger and poverty. During the event, radio personalities offer T-shirts and auction items such as autographed entertainment and sports memorabilia, cultural packages, and TV and stage walk-ons. Auction items up for bid in the past have included tickets to Broadway's "The Producers", starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick; guitars signed by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Eric Clapton, Cream, Johnny Cash, The Who's Pete Townshend and John Entwistle, Les Paul, Rod Stewart, Carlos Santana, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; an autographed flute from Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson; a framed print of the "Abbey Road" album cover autographed by all four members of the Beatles;a walk-on for HBO's "Sex and the City"; show memorabilia signed by Oprah Winfrey; an autographed baseball by Hank Aaron; and much more. The following are some of the most recent successes that were made possible by the outpouring of generosity received during Hungerthon: a.. WHY connected thousands of individuals to emergency food and services throughout the United States. b.. WHY spearheaded the distribution of $125,000 for 17 Monmouth County, New Jersey, community-based organizations. WHY also forged connections between 33 organizations and six artists, including long-time WHY supporters Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, that resulted in concerts and other activities that raised additional funds and public awareness. c.. WHY presented and forged partnerships at the World Food Summit in Rome; the World Food Summit on Sustainable Development; the Washington, DC, Community Food Security Coalition Conference; and the Salzburg Food Security Seminar funded by the W.R. Kellogg Foundation. d.. WHY partnered with the New School University for the first Harry Chapin Awards Forum: Journalism Meets the Grassroots on July 1, 2002. This free, public event gave journalists and direct service providers a chance to share stories from the frontlines in the war against hunger and poverty. Other members of the music community who have helped to make Hungerthon and WHY programs a success include radio personalities: Vin Scelsa, Pete Fornatale, Ken Dashow, Richard Neer, Mike and the Mad Dog, Maria Milito, Scott Muni, Cousin Brucie, and Ben Farnsworth; music publishings and websites: Backstreets Magazine and Chorus and Verse, music companies and societies: SONY, Warner Music Group, Capitol-EMI, The Bottom Line Records, The Right Stuff Records, ASCAP and BMI.
