The Boss has postponed his Columbus and Indianapolis dates after saxophonist and band icon, Clarence "The Big Man" Clemons underwent eye surgery. He suffered a detached retina during the band's concert Monday in Houston. A late-Wednesday email from management to the arena confirmed that the tour, including Mr. Clemons, would restart Tuesday with the Cincinnati show. At last we will get what we were starving for: a Springsteen show! Bill Conlon asked: > What can you tell > me European Fans, is it realistic to expect him to fill stadiums over > there? I know he did years ago, but that was then.... Bill C. Bill, here is some rough statistics of how much he can sell over here in Europe: There were four shows announced the very same day (November 5th 2002) for 4 stadiums in Scandinavia & Finland: - - Olympic stadium in Helsinki, Finland (capacity 50,000, sold out in 3-4 hours) - - Ullevi stadium in Goteborg, Sweden, 2 gigs (100,000, sold out in 3 hours) - - Vallehovin, Oslo, Norway (cap. 40,000 sold out in couple of hours - - Parken, Copenhagen, Denmark (cap. 44,000 sold out) Ok, so that makes close to 250,000 tickets sold in 3-5 hours. And that's just for the very northern part of Europe. So considering the gig is 6 months from now, and he can sell out huge stadiums that fast, I'd say it's definitely worth it for Bruce to play these stadiums :) Regards, Kalle from Finland (a happy owner of Helsinki tickets) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 10:11:39 +0100 From: "Sven-Anders Soderberg" Subject: Re: Stadium Shows mailto:billellenconlon@webtv.net wrote: "As for that, can they sell out at these big places? What can you tell me European Fans, is it realistic to expect him to fill stadiums over there? I know he did years ago, but that was then...." Well Bill, this past Tuesday here in Sweden, not long after the recent sold-out show in Stockholm, tickets went on sale for next June's Gothenburg show (or shows as it turned out). The 50 000 seat stadium sold out in 40 min. with long queues still outside ticket centers around the country. EMA Telstar then decided to book another show the next night which was sold out within 1½ hrs. Ticnet's internet booking site was crippled and the booking phone lines jammed for hours. Seemed like queueing in what was in some places below freezing weather was the only way to get tickets. The rest of scandinavia was reported as selling out immediately as well. EMA Telstar was reported in the papers as saying it was a European record. The first concert, June 21st will be on Midsummer Day, around the time of the longest day of the year (which get pretty long up here in the summer) and is also already the biggest party day of the year, even bigger than new year's eve. One paper using a "well placed source" rumoured that Bruce and the band changed the originally planned date of June 28th to Midsummer so they could experience this old pagan tradition. It's gonna be one fine summer! Sven. [text/html attachment deleted] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Nov 2002 23:23:31 -0500 From: Bob Handlin Subject: Houston, and The Majesty and Mystery of Rock and Roll I can still make out the faint impression of a "96" on my hand today. I can still smell the marker that put it there last Tuesday morning outside the Compaq Center in Houston. And I'm still trying to digest what it all meant. You see, I'm supposed to be jaded by now. I'm certainly too old for heroes. I'm supposed to have mastered the skill of studied detachment. But last Tuesday night, after a long sequence of happy good fortune, I stood 5 feet away from Bruce Springsteen. As hard as I tried to resist, I felt magic, and turned into a little kid again. It almost didn't happen. My wife scored the tickets online and we were going to go together, but she got a new job and couldn't ask for the time off. Plus, who has the money in these days to trek from Boston to Houston for a rock concert? I put the Tickets on eBay. No takers. I saw a request on Backstreets Ticket Exchange, and started negotiations. As the last ditch before selling, I called Harry, my best friend since 7th grade. We had gone to see Bruce together in the first time 1978 (and as usual had bought tickets for the dates we never got). We were 17, and the trek from Eastern Massachusetts to Springfield was a huge adventure. As we watched that show, I found my hero. He was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Now, more than 24 years later, I was going to Houston to see Bruce Springsteen with Harry again. Friday afternoon I called Harry to make final arrangements. The hold music on his office phone system was "Glory Days." On the way home from work, I stopped to get my family some dinner at Boston Market, and "Nothing Man" is on the PA. The omens were very good. We flew to Houston Sunday, and decided to get up Monday morning and take in the Johnson Space Center. Harry has a cranky back, and we couldn't imagine standing in line all day in the rain. But the alarm went off and the radio was playing "I'm on Fire" (you can't make this stuff up). Hmmmm, maybe we should swing by the Compaq Center on the way... Thanks to dedicated fans and a wonderful community, there was a well-organized line. Thanks to the rain and the show in Dallas the night before, it wasn't too late at 10:30 a.m. to get great spots (96 & 97). Thanks to two great ladies from Texas (98 & 99), we didn't have to buy chairs (they loaned us the GOOD ones). Thanks to two party girls, (oops, fine ladies) from California (100 & 101), and a host of other nice folks, we had a great time in line (80% men in line, and we're surrounded by women!). Skipping ahead, by 6:15 we're sitting 20 feet from Bruce's mic stand -- pinching ourselves. A man in a cowboy hat (which Bruce would later wear during "Working on the Highway"), tells tales of his 43 shows, including the night that Bruce sang "Rendevous" just for him. An accountant from New York who has seen all but four shows on the tour debates my theories on the goals of the 1999-2000 tour. I felt like Shoeless Joe in Field of Dreams ("Is this Heaven?" "No, it's Houston"). There's lots about the show I don't remember already (over stimulated, I guess). What I do remember most is a constant battle to fight hero worship (which I lost). The simple joy of it all kept washing over me in new waves. What amazed me again and again was that in a house that was far from full, having played the night before in a different city, the man was giving us everything he had. I can honestly say I've never seen so much sweat in my life. And it was ALL, every last bit of it, great. But the moment that will stick with me forever was during My City of Ruins. After playing the first verse at the piano, Bruce came down to the lower lip of the stage, maybe three feet from us. He was singing as though he were the only person in the world, and as though that one song was all that had or ever would matter to him. Then, with his eyes closed tightly, he leaned out toward us, and he had big goose bumps covering his his arm. The man was so completely immersed in what he was doing, he had given himself chills... So, what DID it all mean. I think it's something like this: Bruce and his music have been an important companion to me through the years. I realized Tuesday, after getting closer to him than I had ever expected to, that the man remains my hero. Because he earns it. Over and over again. Thanks Bruce, for giving us everything you had on a night we'd have forgiven you if you hadn't, and for demonstrating once again that living each moment as though it were your last is a noble pursuit. Hey to Eric Douglas and to Dale, by the way. If you've never met Dale, find her sometime...she's even more of a hoot than in her taper post last LTD...man you crack me up, Dale. Ok. Dallas. Pit. Row 1. Touching Bruce's thighs. What did he play again? I do not remember being so happy in all my life as those two and a half hours with this fantasy of a man. His generosity to his audience to allow people these intimate moments just astounds me. What a rip roaring time with my brother, my friends Karen, Mike, Dan, and Nicky, and new friends I met that day, Vinnie and his 16 year old son Matt, Scott, and especially Eric and his brother Mike. I was so glad i was there with friends too, just grinning at each other, shaking our heads in amazement, high fiving and slapping each other on the back out of sheer joy. a bit emotional? yeah, I hope i never recover. REal fun to have Workin on the Highway, and WHOOOOOOO I didn't think Bruce could be sexier but hot damn didn't he look amazing in that white cowboy hat. Did anybody get better photos than i did, mine did not come out at all cuz i used no flash with Terry McG standing right in front of me...he knows they wont turn out and i'm wasting my energy. A fellow not particularly a fan pointed out to me that Bruce never straightens his knees, and that he sponges water onto his knees next to the riser a few times during the show...any body else notice this? Pretty observant for a kindafan. The GA line. For the sake of integrity of others, i won't even delve into some of that stuff, but what i will say is that there is no way on God's green earth anyone should be allowed to get their number until 8 am the day before the show. Comeon guys. It's a simple solution. If you want to camp out since like friekin Tuesday to be number 3 in line, then stand your butt in front of the arena til 8am the day before the show and get that #3 sharpie'd on your hand, fine. It's the simplest solution. The list starts at 8am Saturday for a sunday show. Roll calls start Saturday later in the day and again at night. Then again Sunday morning and frequently all the next day. AND NO ONE GETS A FREIKIN Complete Skip EXCUSE FOR GOING TO SUNDAY SCHOOL is that CLEAR ??????????????? That'll eliminate what happened in Dallas. Those local yahoos who don't know any lyrics except Dancin in the Dark will not have the opportunity to just happen by the arena for a sporting eventon Friday night, put their name on a convenient little list, then go home and sleep. They sit their butts by the arena til the 8am deal, THEN get on the list. 'While i most CERTAINLY appreciate Bill and Ted for running lists, this is such a no=brainer solution. Bill and TEd will be there all day for three days anyway, so there you go. ok, now that i've hammered that point home. So on to HOuston. Has anyone seen worse security anywhere on the tour? Astounding. They were letting anyone and everyone into the pit. They actually told me that initially they were told all GA's are to be behind the barrier. So imagine that. Bruce comes out and we're all standing back at the 40 yard line. They were wristbanding 'bout everybody who showed up, then after some commotion removed those without a number on their hand, to cheers from the pit, then a few minutes later let em all back in again. WE had no less than 500 in the pit, and i'll bet by night's end there were 650 in there, prostitutes and ex-strippers included, all with their pretty little security passes. The show rocked. No Surrender, Does this Bus stop, She's the One again, and Workin again...highlight of the night is Bruce accepting Dan's REAL cowboy hat as his for Workin. I just cried, i recognized my friend's hat immediately and knew the joy he felt. I felt it too. I asked a fellow next to me to get some photos, but does ANYbody have some of Bruce in that hat, please email me !! The people that i met in Dallas and in HOuston were just so cool, and i can't agree enough that the fans who are really the fans make up for the others who should just go home already. But what can you do, this train does carry saints and sinners, whores and gamblers, and the occasional ex-strippers in their stilletto heals in the pit who cannot dance without a pole and doesn't know the lyrics to even Born in the USA but tries to act like she does. While i am so glad i did not have a ticket for Austin, I feel badly for those who had tickets and all those travel plans for these shows, but we can't really have a show without Clarence can we? Quite the bummer for Clarence and for the fans. They're being saved for 2003. The songs are simply too good not to be played on tour. So look for a few Rising Songs to be dropped to make room for Nothing Man, Let's be Friends, Further On, and Paradise." I agree with James--these songs are too good to be omitted. It looks like the tide is already turning. I made the trek from Chicago to Dallas and saw what I believe was the first 2002 U.S. performance of "Further On..." I witnessed Bruce play the song twice on the reunion tour (the Atlanta debut and the final MSG show) and think the intensity of the song has increased markedly. Let's hope the remaining three yet-unplayed "Rising" songs make it to the setlist in 2003! As for: "Anyone wonder why they don't release Waitin' on a Sunny Day as a single?" I feel as if it's already been released. The deejays at Chicago's greatest radio station (IMHO!), 93.1 WXRT, have taken a liking to the song and play it quite frequently. It's been on more than usual lately, as we've had cold, cloudy, sometimes rainy weather for what seems like an eternity. Alas, today the sun is finally shining and the so-called meteorologists are forecasting a warming trend...let's hope that doesn't mean the song will get pulled from the rotation! Rock on. Perhaps not everyshow will sell out, but you can expect audiences of at least 30.000 at each show. Many people in Europe see Bruce as one of the few R&R living legends (at the level of the Stones and U2), so without being a fan will go to the show. I remember show in '93 in Santiago and '99 in Zaragoza, both smaller towns in Spain, and both with around 30.000 people attending. But at least half of the crowd weren't "fanatics", I remember the show in Zaragoza where most people couldn't even follow the sing along part of Hungry Heart, and of course couldn't sing the "read headed woman" chorus, when Bruce introduced Patty. Two days latter in Madrid, was totally different. When almost everybody in the crow is a fanatic (as it happened in the 7 european shows last month) there is an amazing connection with the stage and the magic is there. But, in any case, I personal have no problems with Bruce trying to reach a larger audience (and making a bigger business, of course). >...which makes me wonder why he doesn't just have Roy play on these acoustic >piano songs he's been doing. Bruce is no slouch at the piano by any means, >but wouldn't the music be better served by Roy playing piano, and Bruce >concentrating on giving his best vocals? Probably you are right. But, I like him to sacrify some musical quality in order to gain magic and emotion. I remember last month in Barcelona. When he asked for silence before Empty Sky, you could hear the typical moron screaming like a maniac, but silence was total when he sat at the piano and started playin Spirits in the Night. For me, those two songs played by Bruce at the piano were, by large, the best momento of the show. _________________________________________________________ Jose A.
