I knew the cold beer could not be resisted !! The dates are - - Melbourne - Telstra Dome on March 20, Sydney - Sydney Cricket Ground on March 22, Brisbane - ANZ Stadium on March 25th - and were announced Saturday (our time) For those of you overseas who may want to make the trip tickets will go on sale on December 9th and apparently will top out at $150.00 which is a little expensive (obviously the state of our $ against the green back ain't helping) but at least he is coming - other big name acts including U2 have recently decided the trip wasn't worth it. At this stage it seems as it's only one show in each city. Regardless I can't wait for the shows. cheers Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 14:58:10 -0800 (PST) From: Allister Subject: Faith rewarded for Kiwi fans With all the attention on Australian rumours a New Zealand concert by Bruce was not really expected but the faith of Kiwi fans has been rewarded with Springsteen's first ever NZ concert announced. This from the NZ Herald: The Boss plans NZ concert 25.11.2002 By RUSSELL BAILLIE Rock icon Bruce Springsteen has confirmed his first concert in New Zealand, in what will probably be the biggest concert event of the summer. Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform at Western Springs Stadium in Auckland on Thursday, March 27. It will be his only New Zealand concert as part of the Australasian leg of a world tour that started in August and will extend long into next year. The veteran musician's profile has risen since September 11, after he figured heavily in rock's response to the terrorist attacks. His latest album, The Rising, chronicles the aftermath of the events through the eyes of the ordinary Americans he has long written about. It debuted at number one in the album charts in 11 countries, including the US. The album also reunited Springsteen in the studio with the E Street Band, with whom he had recorded his biggest-selling album, 1984's Born In the USA, before parting company four years later. Recent reviews of his shows in the Northern Hemisphere suggest the 53-year-old and the band are in exciting form, and still playing their traditional marathon three-hour sets. Said Britain's Independent: "He can still rouse the crowd, skid along the stage on his knees, dance on top of the grand piano but what the show also makes apparent is how he has grown as a vocalist and the band have refined their irrepressible chemistry." Tickets for the Auckland show go on sale on Monday, December 9, through Ticketek. Prices are $165 plus booking fee for a standing area in front of the stage and reserved seating around the stadium's concrete bleachers, and $85 plus booking fee for general admission. Another American act that will cause many baby-boomers to dig into their wallets is also playing an Auckland show in the new year - singer-songwriter Jackson Browne performs at the Civic on February 10. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/entertainmentstorydisplay.cfm?storyID006008&thesection=entertainment&thesubsection=music&thesecondsubsection=general The date of the NZ show seems to tie in with the rumoured Australian dates. Time to start lining up for tickets !! Allister __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus # Powerful. Affordable. The drummer on the Human Touch album was Jeff Porcaro, a member of Toto and very skilled session drummer who played with many of the great rock musicians in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. Jeff died in 1992 and his widow (now remarried) and sons live here in Orlando. Before the concert started last night, a woman and some children were on stage and were paying particular attention to Max's drum set. I thought that odd but put it out of my mind during the concert. Upon arriving home, my wife mentioned that my daughter had told her that one of Jeff's sons who is in my daughter's 5th grade class was going to the concert. I hadn't realized the extent of the Bruce/Porcaro connection until doing some quick internet research today and learned that at Jeff's funeral a letter from Bruce to Jeff's widow Susan was read. Bruce said, in part, "When I met Jeff, I felt like I'd found a kindred soul 3,000 miles from home. He had a tremendous beauty to his playing that went beyond craft and precision into the realm of the spirit. It was with that spirit that he graced and blessed my music. He was a soul man." I guess that's all a lengthy way of saying that I feel pretty certain that Bruce played HT Thursday night in honor of Jeff Porcaro. And now we know what could be the rest of the story. CNN reported that Bruce had written a song > for "Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets" but > JK Rowling (the creator of Harry for those not in > the know) nixed it because she was afraid that it > would be a hit & make Harry even more popular (if > this is possible). I can't fathom an author NOT wanting his or her books to increase in popularity, unless perhaps the writer is a reclusive sort (i.e., J.D. Salinger). I'm not a Harry Potter fan -- I'm more interested in Sherman Potter (from M*A*S*H) -- but I do know that J.K. Rowling is not a recluse. If memory serves me right, however, Ms. Rowling DID want the films to be an all-British production -- all British cast, crew, &c. IF this is true -- and IF Bruce did, in fact, write a song specifically for the Harry Potter movie -- then it stands to reason that Springsteen's submission would have been declined because he's not an Englishman. Turned out Europeans abounded, mostly in the front sections of the floor. Many UK fans, mostly in for only one show, some Italians, some Germans... Some random thoghts: Great setlist, including Candy's Room, Detroit Medley, Promise, Human Touch. Best (?) sign, held by an enthousiastic mother above her child: "Bruce, I chose you over Disney. Play Downbound Train. Age 5" Other sign requests: Rosalita, Kitty's Back The poster which declared that the rows behind the Pit are great was completelz right: I arrived at 6, still I git to stand slightlz elevated (about 5 inches) in the third row and about 30 feet from the stage which I could take completely in with nothing between me and Bruce whatsoever. I seriously doubt the view is better from the pit, because ridiculous as it may seem, you might be TOO close. Of course, Bruce didn't touch MY hand, so who am I too brag. But if you take into account that I talked to some people that arrived at noon to be shut out from the pit... I was once again surprised what a religious experience the show is. I always thought that the "People Get Ready" Finale was a clear nod in this direction, but the whole atmosphere semms at times quite religious and not only from a Church of Bruce standpoint. Probably not too srprising considering the Rising's lyrics. The audience was rather sleepy by european standards. Probably because of the Florida setting. It was very pleasant at the front, though, much much more couteous than on the floor at german concerts. That's it for today. Hoping for a few more surprises for ampa (damn - no floor this time), Thomas from Cologne, Germany ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2002 10:19:59 -0500 From: ErikNorm@aol.com Subject: Re: LuckyTown Digest V9 #107 I'd be surprised if Bruce goes "global/political" any more than he has already. I read about Bono getting a humanitarian of the year award -- or something -- this week, and I wondered if he'd done half as much real good as Bruce has in doing local fundraisers, auctions, donations, etc. I don't subscribe to all of Bruce's politics, but I am completely in tune with his commitment to the local, to the personal, to keeping the focus on changing the next street down. In my experience, it's a much more effective approach. There always seems to be a strain of thought after he releases an album that the "next album" will be his explicit political statement. Seems to me that Bruce has developed a healthy dichotomy -- what he DOES as a member of a community does not necessarily have to be explicitly addressed in his ART. Yes, there's absolutely a connection, but I don't think I want Bruce releasing "Bushwhacker" like Pearl Jam just did, nor do I think it's healthy for him to change his focus so suddenly from making the connection between an individual's thoughts and feelings and the world around them to just addressing the world in general. He might lose fans -- that's fine -- but more importantly, I think the art would suffer a lot if he starts writing about global warming, disarmament, etc., e.g., Sting, Rage against the Machine, etc. I count on Bruce to draw the connections between the personal and the political - -- and the beauty in what he does (for me) is that he makes the personal explicit, but leaves the political implications unsaid and let's us, his listeners (not just his fans, but his LISTENERS), figure out what to do with it. My $.02. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2002 09:50:07 -0800 (PST) From: Jerry White Subject: Re: too much order in the setlist? Eric, I think you have a good point and I would be interested in seeing more spontaneity and variety in the shows. However there are some advantages to having portions of the show pre-ordered. 1. It keeps the pacing better. If the band has to pause after every song while Bruce decides what to play next, calls out the song, waits for Kevin to bring him the right guitar, then starts the number, there is a pause that brings down the energy. When it's pre-programmed, the flow is nice. Also, you can do musical segues. Think of how The Rising blends into Lonesome Day. 2. He wouldn't be able to count off a song with a quick "let's go!" or a "One, two!" at the end of the previous song. Now I'm not Bruce, but I think the explanation for this setlist is that Bruce has a certain message and certain material he wants to get out. Also, back to pacing, he has to think about the show's energy - when to build up, when to calm down. So Empty Sky, You're Missing, Waitin' on a Sunny Day work together as a threesome. That threesome fulfills the dual goals of managing the show's energy, and getting out the new songs. What he ought to do is include Paradise as a slow one worth playing, and then shake it up between those three songs for the "quiet tunes from The Rising" segment of the show. Jerry > > From: "Eric Douglas" > I think the format Bruce has used for years in the live shows is > getting old, > tired and predictable. The shows themselves are as incredible as > ever, but I'd > love to see Bruce really shake things up. You know, just PLAY. > __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Though from what I've seen (on video) and heard (on CD) from this tour it's more than just a name -- he likes "bossing" The Band around even though I'm sure The Band know their roles precisely and concisely. But, like the "audilbes" and "requests," I suspect it's all part of the show. Eagerly awaiting "OUR TURN" in March ... once he's done with the Austin show. Why would they reschedule most of Clarence's "eye-blow-out" concerts for mid December and Austin for March 2? Is it just me who finds this to be totally bizarre?! However, instead of > waiting for Paradise one is probably more likely to become a suicide > bomber in her last despair after having witnessed enough suffering caused > by those she targets by also sacrificing her own life because she sees no > other alternative. And one is even more likely to turn to suicide bombing if he or she is the product of a society that at every turn encourages the wholesale destruction of another people and urges its young to kill themselves in that effort. A society that encourages suicide bombing by its young in its schools, in its mosques, in its television, in its poetry and art, in its play games, and in every other way. That is, unfortunately, Palestinian society. The reality is that she sees no other alternative because her leaders -- her political leaders, her teachers, her preachers -- have left her no other alternative by rejecting every opportunity they were offered for a decent society in a state of their own, preferring to pursue the goal of destroying another society, Israeli society, instead. Does anyone actually think that the Palestinian tecnique of suicide bombing and murdering Israeli civilians has brought them one inch closer to a state of their own? It's time to realize that the Palestinians have "no other alternative" than to commit to living in peace with the Israelis. Why won't they? And why do observors like Palasti support and excuse their current self-destructive path that will get them nowhere? > And the feelings are rather anger, revenge, despair or > commitment (in the very case against the Israelis) rather than a dreamy > flotation in the waiting for (a Muslim) Paradise. > And I suppose you would be just as understanding if ever other people in the world with a grievance adopted the Palestinian technique?
