["Dennis Vroegop" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 01 Dec 2002 10:43:18 +0100 From: Ferdinando Ametrano Subject: Lonesome Day CD single, Bootleg Series and more I've listened a few times now to the new "Lonesome Day" CD single. It's of course better than the previous "The Rising" single: the giant improvement can be easily summarized by the simple fact that while I've skipped TR I've bought LD. The edition I've bought is 3 tracks + 1 video: Lonesome Day / Spirit In The Night (live from Barcelona) / The Rising (MTV VMA) / Lonesome Day (video). There is also a 2-tracks edition, that as for "The Rising" before, only includes "Land Of Hope And Dream" from the "Live In New York City". I wonder who buy such a thing. The rendition of Spirit in Barcelona was emotionally great, and I'm happy to have it in pristine sound quality, but it's almost embarrassing on the artistic point of view: Bruce forgot the lyrics, his piano playing is far from perfect. I'm not sure to release just that song out of context is a good move. The MTV VMA song doesn't feature James Gandolfini intro: too bad, that was the better part of that broadcast. The most important news for me is probably Spirits' inclusion in itself. I haven't clear how much Bruce is still in charge of marketing decisions (and I really hope he's not involved with the T-shorts design), but if something as "embarrassing" as Spirit has been released we can really expect anything now on the official release front. And the time would be right: yesterday along with the single I bought Dylan's Bootleg Series vol.5, hope everybody here will get their copy of this milestone of rock history. What could our boy do, now that Greatful Dead, Dylan, Phish opened their archives? What can he do that could sound new, fresh, now that Pearl Jam have gone so far to release a whole tour and Black Crows allow to download shows from their site? A "from the vaults" DVD series, that's the answer. Come on, release that London 75 and Phoenix 78 footage! And more! Getting back to the single, yesterday I've also bought U2 Electric Storm DVD single. This is in addition to 2 normal Electric Storm CD singles, in a pattern that is now usual for U2 and REM. I don't want to know how much money I've spent in U2 singles from their last album: 2 Beautiful Day singles, 2 Stuck In A Moment, 3 Walk On (including the DVD version), 5 Elevation (including the DVD version), and an incredible 5-track EP with 2 already released studio tracks + 3 unreleased live tracks + Beautiful Day video + the video of their cover of Johnny Cas "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" Oh, and when I write DVD version I mean DVD, not just the mpeg video as for Bruce. So, to end my rambling, allow me to dream about the CD singles that should have been released. The Rising - version 1 The Rising (studio) / LOHAD (NY 2000) / Blood Brothers (NY 2000) / Code Of Silence (NY 2000) The Rising - version 2 The Rising (studio) / LOHAD (NY 2000) / Further Up On The Road (NY 2000) / MCOR (Asbury 2000-2001) The Rising - DVD version The Rising (audio) / LOHAD (NY 2000 video) / Countin' On A Miracle (video) / MCOR (9/11 Telethon video) / Interview (video) Lonesome Day - version 1 Lonesome Day (studio) / Spirit (Barcelona 2002) / Incident (Barcelona 2002) / Dancing In The Dark (Barcelona 2002) Lonesome Day - version 2 Lonesome Day (studio) / Empty Sky (Barcelona 2002) / You're Missing (Barcelona 2002) / MCOR (Barcelona 2002) Lonesome Day - DVD version Lonesome Day (video) / The Rising (MTV VMA video) / Lonesome Day (SNL) / You're Missing (SNL) - ------------ ciao --Nando ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 19:45:52 -0800 (PST) From: kevin baker Subject: B Street band party in Albany 94 Rock in Albany is having it's annual Christmas Ball at the Armory Center on December 11 starting at 5pm. We will be collecting donations and non-perishables for the Daily Bread Food Bank of Toronto. They have been in dire straits this year and could use all the help the Springsteen Community can give them. We will also be selling raffle tickets for a beautiful acoustic guitar signed by Bruce that evening. The proceeds from the raffle go to Prevention Awareness for Life - a non-profit group whose mandate is to educate and assist youth at risk from drugs, alcohol or domestic violence. The post show entertainment will once again be provided by New York/New Jersey Rockers Joe D'Urso & Stone Caravan. Many people within this group have seen and enjoyed JD&SC as a support act for Southside Johnny, at the Pony and Tradewinds during the Light of Day benefit shows (and many other appearances at both venues), and in fact , all over the UK, Western Europe and Canada. Joe's newest CD features LaBamba and Mark "The Love Man" Pender from the Asbury Jukes and the Max Weinberg Seven. It's only a 5 minute walk from the ACC to EBM and you can park in several lots around EBM much cheaper than right at the Air Canada Centre. EBM is also right across the road from the Novotel Hotel and only two blocks south of the Quality Inn on Jarvis. Use this link to access a map to EBM: http://www.jdcaravan.com/gfx/esplanade.jpg See you at the show. Riley has attended a half-dozen shows on Bruce Springsteen's current tour, including concerts in Chicago and L.A.. Springsteen's hit The Rising is played at home games when Riley walks onto the floor, and he has incorporated the song into practices. "I'm rising up, man," says Riley, whose Heat was 1-7 at week's end. With Springsteen playing Saturday at the Heat's home floor, AmericanAirlines Arena, Riley is thinking about violating one of his vaunted rules and keeping his team in town the night before a road game so he can attend the show. . . "It gives me goose bumps when a man who's worked hard on a career for 30 or 40 years, a musician, gets a calling," Riley says of Springsteen whose album is based largely on interviews he did with relatives of those who died in the Sept. 11 tragedy. "He got those people who were impacted to allow him into their lives, into their feelings." ps. I don't know about L.A., but Riley was neither in the GA line nor the pit in Chicago. Maybe he should have gone to the show in San Jose, where the arena let about 30 VIPs into the pit early, including lesser sports figures like USA Soccer's World Cup goat Jeff Agoos. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 16:14:24 -0500 From: Jean Subject: No Springsteen song for Harry Potter Gary Dunaier wrote: >If memory serves me right, however, Ms. Rowling DID >want the films to be an all-British production -- >all British cast, crew, &c. I've been hanging out for a Bruce and E street Band Aussie tour since my parents forbade me from seeing him at the Showgrounds in '84. (Long story - much angst!!!) Luckily, I have seen a couple of the Tom Joad concerts (One in the States and the one in Melb) but am now primed to catch every Aussie gig if possible. I was wondering if anyone had plans/ knowledge about where best to queue. The Melb and Brissie gigs are thru Australia's Ticketbastard -I have commonly used the Camberwell and Glen Waverley Newsagencies, as they are pretty organised when it comes to footy finals. Would be prepared to do the Art Centre/some other location if I knew there were a few keen Bruce fans also doing an overnight queue up and we stood a chance of getting decent ticket opportunities. I am expecting we can buy both Melb and Bris at the same time (Mon Dec 9th - 9am) , but Sydney (and Auckland) are selling at the same time thru Ticketec, so I would be prepared to buy for someone for Melb if they would buy for me in Sydney. Any thoughts, drop me a line Cheers Brendan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Dec 2002 07:31:06 -0500 From: Greg Subject: BOSS GOES DOWN UNDER FROM BIG O NEWS LETTER LATEST BOSS GOES DOWN UNDER Bruce Springsteen brings his tour to Australia and New Zealand next year when he plays Melbourne's Telstra Dome on Mar 20 2003. I really can't believe the people who have the nerve/arrogance to complain about the supposed rigid setlist. Has anyone been paying attention to the last 4 weeks of this tour? 2. I do a fair amount of public speaking and many times I have to the same presentation to different groups on different days...similar to Bruce and the band. There is a need to have a certain order in the presentation/setlist to allow for continuity in the message and a cohesiveness in the show..both for Bruce and the band. 3. I just returned from Miami's show...it was fabulous!! Bono absolutely nailed Because the Night and he and Bruce had a great time doing it. I was in the pit and the show was a knockout from the first note to the last. If the setlist is too set, then stay home and give your Bruce music to someone who can appreciate it. It is insulting to him after he consistently gives night in and night out more than any performer in the history of rock and roll. If you think the setlist should be different, then put a band together and start a tour yourself. Given that tickets for all three shows go on sale at the same time, this is going to make ticket purchasing very difficult for the hard- core fans who wish to attend all three shows (such as myself!). Methinks I will be hanging off the end of my mobile phone to Ticketmaster, while camping out the front of Ticketek. It's also worth noting that Bono and U2 were involved with Amnesty (and indeed have continued to be ever since) from the early 80s, several years before Bruce got involved. Whilst Bruce has done much good within the US especially, his overall contribution politically to the global enviroment has been much much smaller than Bono's. Finally it has happened. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band are coming to New Zealand. A lifelong dream about to be realised. A friend of mine and I had been tentatively planning to go to Australia next year after hearing rumours that the world tour would touch down there, but now those plans have changed. I was literally bouncing off the walls on Monday morning when the tour date was confirmed and I still don't think I have calmed down enough to let it all sink in. For years I had dreamed of making that pilgrimage to New Jersey in the hope of seeing Bruce and the band perform at the Meadowlands. For years that dream was just that, a dream, no matter how fragile it was, it never seemed to be based in reality. For years I have read the LTD, scoured the websites soaking up every bit of information I could find, read every magazine and newspaper article, all the while hoping against hope that one day my musical hero would say to Patti, "honey, why don't we go to New Zealand?". To all you lucky people who have seen Bruce countless times, I am about to join that club to. I have four months to plan my trip, four months of letting the excitement build, the anticipation, the hope he will catch my eye during the show and give me five. I feel like I have completed my apprenticeship in waiting and now I am about to be admitted to an exclusive club. How sweet it is... At least, it was for me when the tickets for the Rotterdam show went on sale. Me and my friend spend a long night in front of the postoffice (where the tickets were sold) but we had a great time. And things were organized here very, very well, with thanks to the Dutch postal service. Everything went smoothly, everybody who was in the ticketline got all the tickets they wanted. So... Before continuing that post, I shall just reflect upon one reply I got by Jerry ??? (JerzykB@aol.com) in Digest #111. Let me state that this message was not connected to Bruce or his music. Whatever I wrote that incorporated issues of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict went to the extent that I thought was of relevance to Bruce's latest work and I tried to connect it to his music. The reason of this is that the point of this Digest is to discuss issues about Bruce and his music. The reply I got was broad statements about the Palestinian society echoing one typical line of sentiment and policy statements about the conflict and the responsibility of the Palestinian society as a whole - nothing that would connect to Bruce any more. Therefore I think it inappropriate to reply to that message on the merits in this Digest because it would be a misuse of this forum. It would be an abuse of the time and patience of all the subscribers to initiate a rather general and political debate about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or any of the two societies as a whole. Thanks for reading - Gabor Palasti Hungary, Central - Europe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 17:08:35 +0100 From: "Linda" Subject: Re: Paradise First I have to say this post is not aimed to start a discussion, just a post to vent my feelings. I've read enough of these posts everywhere to not stay silent any longer. Each time I've felt a desire to reply I've stopped myself, knowing what reactions I'd get if I wrote. But I can't stand this blindness anymore, this unability to see another people's sufferings or see why certain things are happening. The action of suicide bombers is disgusting imo, and no, it doesn't lead to anything good, only more blood spilling. But is it that difficult to see *why* it's happening? To blame it all on the Palestinina society is so ignorant it makes me furious (and let's not bring up Islam as plenty of Palestines are Christian). Yes, the mentality is there among many people, but not all, and certainly not all in the Palestinina government either. Fanatic groups takes advantage of people's despair of course. But terrorism is really the only weapon they have to fight Isreal. Desperate people with nothing to lose can be driven to anything. And while I don't and can't defend this terrorism in any way (it causes death of innocent people on both sides), I understand that they feel it's the only thing they can do. They are misguided, cause it will never help them get peace, but at least *try* to understand *they* think it's the only thing they can do. Terrorism of an oppressed people is one thing, terrorism by a big Military force is way worse imo. If Israel stopped the occupation, gave the Palestines what they are entitled to, and then leave them alone I guarantee that the terrorism will cease to exist (except for possible a few handful fanatics who thrives on chaos and death and won't stop). Isreal is lead by a massmurder, Sharon. Whom no one even dares to take to Haag, even if ideas of this have been brought up. I saw yesterday on tv a group calling themselves "the black widows", all Nationalities of elderly women trying to do something good. They were taking down an Israel roadblock outside a Palestine village. One Jewish old woman there showed her tattoo from Aushwitch and said "I never thought I had to go through that to see my own people do the same to the Palestine people as what the Germans did to us". Wise words. While the terrorism is despicable, it can be understood why it's happening as mislead suffering people see it as the only way out. Israel's terrorism however can't be understood from the same viewpoint, so the only thing remaining is coldblooded murder and misuse of power. Question yourself who wants to eliminate who. Isreal is the real Think about that. Linda Palasti Gabor opined: > . However, instead of > waiting for Paradise one is probably more likely to become a suicide > bomber in her last despair after having witnessed enough suffering caused > by those she targets by also sacrificing her own life because she sees no > other alternative. And one is even more likely to turn to suicide bombing if he or she is the product of a society that at every turn encourages the wholesale destruction of another people and urges its young to kill themselves in that effort. A society that encourages suicide bombing by its young in its schools, in its mosques, in its television, in its poetry and art, in its play games, and in every other way. That is, unfortunately, Palestinian society. The reality is that she sees no other alternative because her leaders -- her political leaders, her teachers, her preachers -- have left her no other alternative by rejecting every opportunity they were offered for a decent society in a state of their own, preferring to pursue the goal of destroying another society, Israeli society, instead. Does anyone actually think that the Palestinian tecnique of suicide bombing and murdering Israeli civilians has brought them one inch closer to a state of their own? It's time to realize that the Palestinians have "no other alternative" than to commit to living in peace with the Israelis. Why won't they? And why do observors like Palasti support and excuse their current self-destructive path that will get them nowhere? > And the feelings are rather anger, revenge, despair or > commitment (in the very case against the Israelis) rather than a dreamy > flotation in the waiting for (a Muslim) Paradise. > And I suppose you would be just as understanding if ever other people in the world with a grievance adopted the Palestinian technique? If your family were its victims?
