36K Eurotramp Brucefan Map 5/95 ************************* *EURO-TRAMP BRUCEFAN MAP* * May, 1995. * ************************* (by Gabor Palasti, jyj0816@vm.cc.u-szeged.hu) Hello. You are reading the documentary file attached to the etramp.gif (short for eurotramp.gif) file, which contains a small map of Europe. On this map of Europe, you can find cities where Luckytown Digesters of the time live. They are people who volunteer helping other Luckytowners arriving to their cities, having a beer and Bruce-chat with, etc. This documentary file gives a wider explanation of the Euro-tramp Brucefan Map Project, also of the etramp.gif file, and finally provides you with more detailed information about those who are on the map. TABLE OF CONTENTS I. What is this Euro-tramp Brucefan Map Project at all? II. Explaining the etramp.gif file III. Personal information IV. European Fan Routes V. Future changes VI. Send your notes to... I. WHAT IS THIS EURO-TRAMP BRUCEFAN MAP PROJECT AT ALL? To get a better understanding of what this project is about, let me share with you a shortened version of the two posts sent to the Digest about the subject: * * * 1. Date: Tue, 04 Apr 95 13:06:15 +0200 From: Gabor Palasti Subject: Euro-tramp Brucefan Map To: luckytown@netcom.com Hello tramps (mostly those in Europe), This is a call for compiling a Euro-tramp Brucefan Map. 1/ What is a Euro-tramp Brucefan Map in fact? It would be a compilation of European Luckytowners, concerning their place of residence. Technically it appears as a *.gif file of Europe, with all the tramp-residences of those who participate on. Also a *.doc file with some necessary info. The files are intended to be located at the ftp.uwp.edu site, from where anyone can retrieve them. 2/ What is the conception of such a map? - Normally you may expect to have an 'I am going to city "A" in country "X" next week, could some kind soul give me some hints of where to find cheap bootleg-stores, maybe we could have a beer together?...' type of post in every 10th Digest. To have such a map would definitely give a quick answer of who to contact and where. - For two, as there have been already some meetings organized by Luckytowners with others, it is always easier for you to see: 'are there any people from my area with whom I could have a nice chat about Bruce, and the tricky ways of the world with a beer, knowing that, to the best of my knowledge, there isn't a single Bruce-fan in my town?' - For three, summer is approaching quickly, time to travel around. It's always nice to know if there is someone from this community whom you could meet in a foreign town in a country where you may not even speak the language. Maybe she/he could show you around, already knows what's worth seeing, maybe even could accommodate you... With all these things in mind: 3/ How to carry out practically the establishment of such a map? I have made a form. Those volunteering to participate should fill it in and return it to my address. PLEASE, DON'T FILL THE DIGEST WITH THE ANSWERS! I also welcome any suggestions and ideas. +++ please find form in the end of the document +++ * * * 2. Date: Tue, 18 Apr 95 19:34:41 +0200 From: Gabor Palasti To: luckytown@netcom.com Hello Tramps, Upon the suggestion of many who have answered, I decided to make a little change in the output-format. With regards to the fact, that the Map is going to be placed in a public ftp-site directory, from where anyone can freely retrieve it, I shall not make addresses (street, house-number and postal code number) and phone-numbers public. Instead, I'll substitute them with e-mail addresses. This might prevent the misuse of the information by 'outsiders' (non-LTD-ers) searching for a cheap tour-organizer (...in the most extreme case...) II. EXPLAINING THE ETRAMP.GIF FILE 1/ The file that you have succesfully retreived by now is a file of Europe. It is a Bitmap picture file, that is considered to be amongst the most common ones for DOS. It should be recognised by a great deal of picture viewers. However, the entire map with all the information on is too huge to match your screen. If it does, the letters are so small, that you can't read them. For this reason, I recommend you to use a picture-viewer that allows you to look at only segments of the picture at the same time. Such picture-viewers are widely available, and shareware versions of such softwares may be found at this very ftp-site (ftp.uwp.edu) as well. (I myself am using qpeg, and can only recommend this one.) 2/ Let us now get to discussing what you can find on the map. Besides the borders between different states, you can only find the following information on the map: - name of the country; - name of the city where a fellow-LTD-er lives; - some personal info about the local LD-er: - christian-name - gender (F/M) - age Unfortunately it was not at all possible to note more info unless I wanted to make the whole map overloaded. Look for any other information about either the person or the city in the PERSONAL INFORMATION section. Those countries that are not represented in the project are left grey. All others are coloured. III. PERSONAL INFORMAITON What you may find here are facts about the city and the person in question. Some of the info appear on the map as well. This section follows the alphabetical order of the countries involved, and within a country, the alphabetical order of the cities. The alpabetical order of the person applies to more participants from the same city. The answers given are actually the completed forms that you may find below: * * * A/ Personal info Name: Gender: Age: B/ Place of residence Country: City: E-mail: Approximate city-size: If a small city/village, some hints about where to find it on a map (like nearest largest city, famous bay, anything specific): Put an 'x' if your city is easy to approach by... a/ car b/ train c/ coach/bus d/ plane 1e/ ship f/ ferry g/ others, like: C/ Degree of participation: Let's suppose, that a Luckytowner sends a mail to you saying that she/he is coming to your city. It contains people who are geographically on the same axe, and are relatively easy to travel from one to another. It, consequently, concerns a smaller region, like a Route of Scandinavian LTDers, or of Middle-Europeaners, of Mediterranians, etc. It makes easier to travel around a region of Europe. However, it needs more commitment: more fellow-LTDers are likely to come then to individual participants, I guess. If there is demand, and there are more people to volunteer, the idea can be developed and worked out. * * * AUSTRIA 1. A/ Personal info Name: Oliver A. EUROPEAN FAN-ROUTES Now, what does category f/ (...are willing to be part of a European Fan-Route) mean in more details? A fan-route is an idea that has not been fully developed yet, and is not likely to be this time (due to the necessary exam-term rush), but there have been perhaps enough people volunteering from an area, so this could be the future for an even more developed cooperation between us, mostly helping physical mobility. Here is the note attached to the end of the first post about the whole idea into the Digest. * * * A European Fan Route is an advanced idea of the Euro-tramp Brucefan Map. * * * V. FUTURE CHANGES As more and more people subscribe to the Digest (proportionally from Europe as well), this is likely that new LTD-ers may want to join this Euro-tramp Brucefan Map. For this reason, I shall post a small note to the Digest after a reasonable amount of time has elapsed - like in each second or third month. Anybody who wants to sign on should fill in the form and send it to me: jyj0816@vm.cc.u-szeged.hu or jyj0816@alfa.cab.u-szeged.hu Please find the form attached to the end of this post, from where you can easily cut it off. Also, the first idea was about making addresses and phone-numbers public. As a several people responded that this may not be so good to do in case of uploading the file to an open public ftp-site, the idea was dropped. On the other hand, still the majority of those replying sent me addresses and phone- numbers as well. I am, of course, willing to make them public, but only if you expressly declare that you agree on making them public - by way of sending me a mail concerning this statement. My understanding of the sitation is, that making phone-numbers public may not really lead to any misuse of the knowledge (this is something you could easily include into your signature-file as well), but on the other hand, making addresses public perhaps really should be considered twice before doing it. I try to keep the files (both this and the etramp.gif) updated as much as possible. In case I have had a reasonably sufficient number of new info, I shall post the fact about the update into the Digest. VI. SEND YOUR NOTES TO... Any aditions, corrections, or just your opinion, view are welcome. I am also eager to hear about how people could use the info and the idea in practice - perhaps a new tour could really show us how much this is worth... Please, send your notes to: jyj0816@vm.cc.u-szeged.hu or jyj0816@alfa.cab.u-szeged.hu Thank you very much for your participation and attention: Gabor Palasti *********************** jyj0816@vm.cc.u-szeged.hu also jyj0816@alfa.cab.u-szeged.hu ----------------------------------------------------------------- Euro-tramp Brucefan Map, 1995. - form A/ Personal info Name: Gender: Age: B/ Place of residence Country: City: E-mail: *************************************************************** This section is optional.
